Winnipeg Sun Mayor Sam Katz is challenging a Maclean's magazine report labelling(sic) Winnipeg the second most dangerous city in Canada.

Katz said the city isn't a dangerous place to live or visit. The union representing Winnipeg's police officers begs to differ.

"To have a high placement in a ranking of this ilk is certainly not something to be proud of," Katz said, responding to yesterday's report by the national magazine.

Saskatoon is ranked first and Regina third. Caledon, Ont., is the safest city, according to Maclean's.

Canada's two largest cities, Toronto and Montreal, ranked 29th and 24th, respectively.
Kinda hard to deny too vigorously the title. Far too many murders for a city our size. Far too much gang activity.

There is a simple consistency between Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Regina that is impossible to deny. You figure it out.

We need to find a way to turn this destructive energy into something productive. Saskatchewan and Manitoba have the lowest unemployment rates in Canada. Time to put the lazy idle to work.

It is also time to build more jails. If you insist upon living a lifestyle that is counter to what society demands spend some time in jail. Or learn a trade. Whatever. Just stop being leeches on society.

Leave it to a fricking union to turn this into a union issue. Is this asshole suggesting that were we to make Winnipeg Police the best paid we'd have the safest city in Canada. What a knob.
Winnipeg Sun Mike Sutherland, head of the Winnipeg Police Association, said he is surprised Winnipeg didn't rank No. 1.

'Exchanging bullets'

"We truly do live in a dangerous city and the unknown is the gang population because when they're busy exchanging bullets they're not really too worried about passersby who are in the wrong place at the wrong time," Sutherland said.

He said Winnipeg police officers are underpaid given the dangers they face.

"We may be No. 2 in crime but our officers are No. 44 in terms of pay (compared with other police agencies in Canada)," Sutherland said.

Hell, if we only paid our police more, everything would be okay eh??? lol!

What else can one say?
Imho, a few more jails would be nice.

Soon to follow Sutherland dive into the issue will be every other leech wanting more money for whatever their cause as it relates to crime prevention.

Obviously MacLeans did not qualify their comments, as we all know that the North End is crime free and a great place to raise kids.

so is he saying that if officers were paid better... they would do a better job of reducing violence in the city? That sure sounds like what he is saying.

GOM- that consistency of having the most beautiful women, and extremely nice older (over50) men, is worth the minor trouble!
Who cares how a magazine rates anything! And all the killings in Vancouver haven't done any damage to their ratings, because they are hosting the Olympics and that would be a no-no for reporting!
Every place has killings! Luckily it is people involved in the drug trade trying to start up a new business!
Business is tough right now, especially since Bush declared war on (poverty, Iraq, literacy (lol), insurgents, drugstores, Walmart, oil magnates).

I was hoping Calgary would take #1 spot; after all, they are number 1 in everything, aren't they Very Happy

Seriously though, this is just a sign of the social ills that are present in Winnipeg and how we need to take this more seriously if we want a better Winnipeg. Doing very little has been the status quo and hasn't produced positive results. What needs to be done? I'm not sure; that would be up to professionals to figure out, and I wish them all the best.

BTW, this story made it in the Edmonton Sun, and I'll bet it made it in Calgary's paper too. This just leads to emphasizing Winnipeg's not-so-great national reputation.

I wonder how the cost of university tuition figured into the Maclean's ratings....

I take any Macleans survey with a huge grain of salt. The factors they use to determine their rankings has been very screwy IMHO.

I wonder if that Richler story from yesterday's Star made it into the Calgary and Edmonton papers. See,it may not be entirely the story per se. Rather it is the story they CHOOSE to publish.

Yeah, Winnipeg needs to improve much in these areas. Ummmm, so too does Edmonton. And this is not new for Edmonton. Yet that is not how I will judge Edmonton. Nor will I constantly dwell on that negative aspect of Edmonton.

EdWin, is that you over on the darkside spouting vitriol about this burgh as chance? Is this what you do in your spare time? Run from forum to forum shitting on Winnipeg? Why do you do this?

Ya ya. I know. You love Winnipeg. You hate to see what has become of Winnipeg. You want to see Winnipeg become all it can be.

Winnipeg has warts. We know that. We need to focus on WHAT WE CAN DO ABOUT IT. Maybe some ideas? Maybe participate in the cure instead of sitting behind a computer 1300 kilometers away constantly bitching about it.

There are many ways of discussing issues. Maybe constructive comments might be useful every now and then. How be you move back here and actually do something positive about it.

Sheesh man. Find something else to do in your spare time.

Yeah. We posted that here yesterday and referenced it above... But thanks TL. It's nice to see someone write about the positives for a change. But that perspective often results is charges of wearing rose coloured glasses.

Ya beat me to it....I wanted to post this also...seems like a very good take on the Peg (with the exception of Wellington Crescent being on the St. Boniface side of the "Rouge River". Smile

That modesty: You realize, after a while, that it has less to do with Winnipeggers underestimating just how fascinating their city is than their knowing, in some quiet part of their being, that if they do the modern thing and share it too much, then they may well lose the conditions that make it such a singular and ultimately liveable city.
So everyone....SSSSHHHHH! or else, everyone we don't want will move here....and we'll become just like everyone else.

To bad the general public don't agree , elections prove it and so do appointments of judges . No one objects . So start to change them first. After all we don't want the American system of judges .

It would be nice if Harper had a majority so that he could pass some stronger legislation and not have the bloody bleeding hearts water it down because they like criminals more than victims.

Also, dump some of the Liberal appointed judges that are soft on crime.
