Today's Sun Poll: Should drunk drivers be protected against lawsuits under no-fault insurance?
yes 14%
no 86%

Total Votes for this Question: 157

So begins a slippery slope? No fault insurance was established for a reason. Is it being suggested that just this one exception is okay? Should we have the right to sue no matter the situation? Seems MPI is being quite selective in what they will cover and what they won't.

I don't think we can have it both ways.

If allowed, people would then have to take out additional insurance, or, the system would be kicked up a notch, and we would end up a square one.

We must remember that we do have very cheap insurance here, comparitively speaking.

I thought that no fault actually meant no fault. But I guess MPI will have to determine who is drunk enough to be at fault within the no fault system??? Maybe they can also determine whose fault it is that someone is drunk enough to be at fault in an accident. Oh GOd, my head hurts, and its so early.

One of the reasons that we do have cheap insurance, is the fact that MPI took the high cost of litigation out of the equation.
There were many cases , each with the "lawyers" arguing time and again what compensation should be.
It was an ongoing, never ending, very expensive , very wasteful situation. By pre setting compensation levels, all that nonsense disappeared, hence the great savings , hence our low cost auto insurance.
There were lawyers working for both sides that simply were not needed any more!
This doesn't mean that things cannot change, but I would imagine that there would be a long procedure to get those changes. Does drunk driving compensation need a review?

Would the situation change if a lawyer was drunk and got into an accident?

THIS is cheap insurance?

I paid less than this in New Jersey for the same coverage...and New Jersey has the second highest rates in the US (Massachusetts is higher).

The rates for a prairie province...EVEN IN THE CITY should not be higher than about $500/year...$1k for FULL COVERAGE.

I think someone should be reevaluating what they think is CHEAP insurance.

Add to that the ridiculous cost of motorcycle insurance. $2400/year?
Cycle insurance should be less than $200/year...especially considering you can only ride the thing for a few months each year.

off topic Hey, this is about drunk driving insurance. Start another thread!

Here is how a mod at another forum let's people know they are off topic:
This is a thread about CFL rules. If you want to talk about the NFL, start another thread - surely it can't be that hard to understand.
Nice...

I don't believe in drunk driving insurance.

Should you get caught drunk driving...you should lose your license AND insurance for at least one year...plain and simple.

if your under the influence of alcohol, then your insurance is void.
if you refuse a breathalyzer at the scene of an accident, your insurance is void.

as for the rates we pay compared to other canadian cities our rates are low.. i cant say anything about the united states because its like a totally difference country or something.

Your insurance is indeed void. But the other guy's is not. And under "no fault" the other guy has precious few options to recover against you.

ooo where can I get drunk driving insurance? Is that like insurance that makes sure if you are ever sober that you will be given alcohol immediatly? or is that insurance that pays your fines for you and supplies you with a Limo until you get your license back? whatever the case... where can I sign up?

But at least it beats the silly system of suing for obscene amounts which we all pay with increased rates.

I can't undersand why, if MPIC is voiding their responsibility where a driver is drunk, we cannot sue the drunk driver privately. That part of the No Fault makes no sense to me.
