The legal drinking age is 18, so the reason to try and prevent an 18 year old from drinking is, what?

The Marx brothers would never propose such a ridiculous solution. They'd probably have proposed to take the kids out to drink as part of a class.

The poll on CTV.ca right now, Should Manitoba increase the drinking age from 18 to 19?
Yes, they should (62 %) 1000 votes
No, they shouldn't (38 %) 602 votes.

What kind of ridiculous people vote on CTV web polls?

It might well be because some peeps believe 18 year old's aren't particularly bright. Look at how they dress. That speaks volumes.

We never dressed weirdly when we were 18... Heh heh

I think if they are going to do anything with the drinking age, they should abolish it...or at least lower it to 12 or so.

Why there's a "drinking age" at all seems ridiculous.

Creating ambiguous limitations on teens only presents lines for them to cross. And teaches them at an early age that rules don't mean anything, as MOST parents will let their children drink before they reach the "official" age anyway. (I don't mean buying them a case of beer, but certainly having a sip off there's or a glass of wine for a "special" occasion).

What does that do for them as they get older? When there are rules that actually mean something...like don't steal...or don't kill? What do they do? Say "Well, I'll only kill someone this one time!"?

The drinking age does nothing to curb alcoholism...as when they come "of age"...many people go out and "binge" or "party" for the first few years to celebrate.

No, some things require limits. Smoking and drinking are two that do IMO.

Children need a certain maturity before being allowed to make some life altering decisions.

Correct me if I'm wrong but children under 18 can drink if they are with their parents. That said if the parents are too stupid to be moderators for their kids they should be taken away.

100% correct.. parents or caregiver.... technically a teacher has the legal right to offer your kid alcohol whilst they are in charge of them...

IMHO, All the places that have an age 19 drinking law should change it to 18. You can trust a 18 year old to vote, but not to buy liquor? c'mon!

yeah and in today's day and age.. if your gonna vote.. you might as well vote drunk!

I still stand by my suggestion...abolish the drinking age as an official "limit".

It's really ridiculous and has nothing to do with maturity or ability to "handle" it.

I'm not suggesting a bartender should be able to tell the maturity level, or even the ability of someone to handle alcohol. They are in business to SELL alcohol...not to limit the sales.

And I'm sure, should the age limit be abolished, there will be the extreme circumstances where a 12-year-old goes to rehab, or a 15-year-old drinks himself stupid. But of the thousands-to-millions of youth who would be drinking, half-a-dozen cases would certainly be the extremes.

Most of it would come down to education, and instruction. It would come down to responsibility and teaching the youth what is and is not appropriate. It would mean holding parents to the responsibility of their children.

Extreme expectations I'll admit...but having an "age limit" is superfluous anyway...as there are numerous cases of people OVER 18, OVER 21, OVER 40 who should not be drinking.

It does? I did not know that.

I had always thought it ran 24/7...just with fewer buses during "off" hours.

That IS dumb.

Whynot just leave the bar before the last bus?

cause the girls that are willing to go home with you on the bus are not that desperate until after closing time?

If they are willing to go home with you on a bus, they are truly desperate. The driver may not let them on, unless you have a white cane.
