The CBC hands-out approach never ends. Some people are very critical of Canwest and the Aspers. How many companies have to compete against a crown corporation that seemingly does not understand enough is enough?

I wonder if the CBC did not exist would Canwest be in better shape? Just musing.

It is time to shut down the CBC and stop sinking the billions dollars into that black hole.

Winnipeg Sun While most Canadian media outlets are slashing jobs and other costs to stay afloat in a sea of bad economic news for the industry, the CBC is once again rattling its tin cup for more handouts from taxpayers.

The public broadcaster already covers its costs in large part by siphoning just over $1 billion a year from the public purse.

But apparently that won't be nearly enough to pay the bills in the coming year.

Even before the economic crash last fall, government figures show the CBC had already rung up another $59 million in red ink for the year ending Aug. 31, 2008 -- on top of its usual handout that was 8% higher last year than 2007.

Read more here.

How do the mainstream American channels (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, etc.) differ from the CBC? Are they private entities that don't rely on government handouts? I've wondered this since you never hear about these channels having any difficulties with funding.

I expect you may well hear about US networks soon. There are several newspapers in big trouble in the US. The CBC is more closely related to PBS.

In Canada the CTV network has had cut-backs and "right-sizing". You've surely heard about Global-Canwest. Papers such as the Free Press (and others) have laid off staff and made editorial decisions based upon their economic status.

The CBC has always been a tax-sucking machine. We don't need it, no matter how good their programming might be. Let's turn the CBC into Canada's PBS and let private industry and individuals contribute. Maybe a couple tax dollars, but only a tiny fraction of what it receives today.

We should not be creating any new tax-sucking machines, no matter how good the programming is.

The taxpayer-funded CBC has paid out almost $1 million in performance and incentive bonuses to members of its senior executive team this year.

And even less to ones with crappy programming, like the CBC.

If the CBC had good programming, then they could attract advertisers to generate the income needed to support their programming, but alas, chicken meet egg.

Apparently the Finance Minister has said he will not bail the CBC out. Good news.

This is the biggest waste of tax dollars in the global age of TV. They should be given 5 yrs to figure out how to survive with no tax money and be cut off in 8 .

I don't agree with this but some peeps here do agree in principle:
""There is a salary component and an incentive component and given the size of the organization, the budgets that are administered, the number of people that are managed, you have to have a compensation package that allows you to attract and retain not only competent but talented management," said Keay."

I don't have a problem per se with executive bonuses. But they should be based on real improvements (ie revenue growth or productivity improvements). Use a real SMART plan and reward accordingly.

SMART =
S pecific
M easurable
A chievable
R ealistic
T ime-Bound
