Is your happiness in life based largely on your own efforts or external factors?

I ask this because I can recall reading an article about a Winnipegger who went to Africa for a while to volunteer in a village. Although the villagers were living in straw huts and were extremely impoverished compared to us, she reported the kids as being really quite happy. The kids' main form of recreation was kicking around a soccer ball, not playing video games.

Growing up as children in the 50s and 60s illustrate your point as well. We did not have the toys available to us then that children (and adults) do today. But I vividly recall happily playing cowboys and Indians with crudely hand made weapons.

That also goes for us today as adults. We can be happy with our lot in life and make of it what we can. Or we can be bitter and resentful. Positive or negative. I'd hate to be a glass half full kinda' guy...

Glass is half-full is how I see things. I didn't grow up rich or with the amenities kids have today, but I thought life in a small town was pretty darn good, ie. being able to cycle anywhere, without fear of traffic or gangs. Kids today have so much, I wonder if they really appreciate all the toys they accumulate from birthdays, etc. From what I've seen, kids are getting numb to all of what they have. Some adults, too, including moi.

Yes how true the other day I overheard a child complaining, cause he would have to walk to get the bus to school in the morning . Seems that we as parents do to much for our kids and try to shelter them from to much.

I can't believe how kids in my neighborhood live so close to school, easily within the distance I used to walk as a kid to go to elementary and high school) and yet they get rides from mommy and daddy! Are the streets of Winnipeg really that dangerous?

In some parents eyes , more that they want there child to have what they did not, or not have to experience the bad they did . Little did they realize that's how you grow and face adversity.

Some won't feel their kids are safe until the guy(s) in the "white van(s)" is/are caught.

I think that we are living in different times...unfortunately.

The "white vans" have always been there just wasn't reported as often. The secret is to teach your child not to talk to strangers. My parents taught me that...wait a minute...it obviously didn't work as I am on here talking to you freaks. oops
