I love the fact that Winnipeg is really just a small town with all the good things that go along with that. No matter where you go, you'll always bump into somebody that you know.

I like the fact I didn't have to pay 400k for my house, which is what it would have cost in Edmonton/calgary/vancouver/toronto/montreal.

I like the fact that Winnipeg is growing population wise, becoming a larger and more competitive city with other large Canadian cities instead of Brandon, Regina and Dugald, getting more skyscrapers, attitudes are changing (albeit slow but this is better than nothing I guess) and wanting more for the city, more immigrants are choosing Winnipeg helping to boost the population, young people are starting to want to stay in Winnipeg and again slowly starting to have a more positive attitude and want bigger and better things for the city.

Winnipeg will only get bigger and better. I have a large vision for my hometown, and firmly believe once we get the right kind of leadership. I want people from around Canada to talk about Winnipeg in a more positive context instead of what is generally done today. It will change but only with time; I just hope it's sooner rather than later cheers

Really? You disagree with every single point I've made in the previous statement?

Anyways, I expect to generate controversy with my vision for Winnipeg. It happened in NW, and I'll bet it will happen here. I now live in a city that is striving for the best in almost every way possible. I've tasted this, and now I want it for my hometown.

I'll use this analogy. I'm sure most of your parents encouraged and nurtured you as you grew up. They always told you to accept yourself for who you are. But didn't they also tell you to be the best that you can be? To strive for the best in your life and to never give up? Well, that is the way I see things now, but didn't always have that attitude. When I lived in Winnipeg, I had little expectations for the city, like your average Winnipegger. But when I started to travel across the country, and live in different cities, my eyes were opened to what growing, vibrant and active cities are. And now I want this for Winnipeg. The city deserves it.

I say enough with the "loserpeg, winterpeg, barrenfrozen wasteland, can't do, never going to happen, too small, too poor, welfarepeg" joking mentalities that I have grown up with. It's pure and utter garbage. This needs to stop now. I don't understand how so many Winnipeggers can talk about their hometown like this, including myself when I was younger, but this has started to change now. I'm tired of being told that Winnipeg can't, because I know damn well Winnipeg can. Period.

Yes, captain positivity is here to stay Very Happy

I recall the mayor of Edmonton telling the Mayor of Winnipeg that he envies our city because of our exchange district. The old Chicago style buildings are one of our greatest assets.

IMHO that area should be treated with respect, buildings should not be left vacant to rot to the point of no return.

I didn't mean to be argumentative. I just think that one of the best things about Winnipeg is that it is like a small town and you seem to want to change it into a big city.
My mother told me to not pretend to be something I'm not, but I don't really think she said it quite that way...Smile

It's a communication thing.

Will Winnipeg still be "Winnipeg" with a million people? Probably. The problem I have is our attitude. We never seem to push for something better. I can't imagine for the life of me how we developed such an attitude. You encounter it whenever anything new, bigger, better is proposed. Like the stadium, or BRT, or a museum, convention centre...

I love my home the way it is, and most everyone I know is happy with their home too, those that didn't like Winnipeg moved on to bigger and better things. Why must Winnipeg always be compared to some other city like Regina, Calgary,Edmonton or Toronto? What is so awful about Winnipeg having its very own identity? We are what we are for better or worse, warts and all. I have absolutely no complaints about our city.

Hey! Where else could you go to work in a canoe?
Or with cross country skis in the winter.
There are so many parks, well kept and safe. (At least they used to be, don't know about now...).
Remember, Winnipeg has the biggest Elm tree forest in North America.
I always tell peeps here that my city is full of green in the summer, and white in the winter. Others answer they only have smog and crime in theirs.

In 20 years in Winnipeg I've lived in 4 different neighborhoods, Windsor Park, Old St Boniface, northend very briefly and now Transcona for the last 6 years. In each neighborhood up and down the street and across the back lanes we all had a good idea who we all were, knew which kids belonged where, etc.Just a great feeling of community all around, I don't understand why we would want to change this.

I think you and I are still in the minority GOM, but like I said, acceptance of change and a more positive attitude is changing. Winnipeg will blossom, it will just take time.

Oh and by the way, we compare a city to other cities to learn both the pros and cons in terms of how to make a city work better. Comparison to other cities doesn't mean we want to be "exactly like them and loose our identity". I, for the love of God, don't understand why people are so paranoid about this.

Another thing i like about this city is the ability to rise to the occasion and do a good job of it hosting a event , helping a family thru something , making sure most are okay .
Yes all places do it but we are very good at it and should be proud of it .

Pav is right. Winnipeg is a very philanthropic place. (If I spelled that wrong, don't even think about bitching about it) Take a good look at some of the community supported organizations. The Winnipeg Foundation is incredible considering the population base it draws from. $100 million gift from one donor certainly says something. The United Way is half way to their campaign target already. I think thats where some of the small town rhetoric comes from.

I love the fact that we're not quite big enough for an NFL football team, but we ARE big enough for hooters.
What can i say, this is a great city.

Just teasing...I haven't been to Folklorama yet...but have been meaning to get there.
Maybe next time.
I immigrated here 5 years ago...people still ask me how I like it compared to...
Honestly...it's probably the best place I've lived (at least in my memory).
It offers a "little bit of everything" without overwhelming you with too much of anything.
Everywhere has problems, some more, some less, and certainly of different types...but overall...Winnipeg is one of the best cities I've ever been to...let alone lived...and I've travelled MOST of North America.

I like the fact that I can get from my house to 95% of the rest of the city in under 30 minutes.
