Sorry JTF the book is some what right , but we have started the act of oppression with them , is that not why most of our forefathers came here to escape from .

We've been oppressing the Indians since we came here I thought.

How else have we managed to take the good land for ourselves (sticking the native folk out in the boonies)...and making them stay there, more or less.

What laws/rules have to change to allow land ownership on a reserve? What about leasing land on a reserve? Will that allow for home ownership? Is this practical given the dearth of jobs on reserves?

What about buying a house off reserves? There is nothing preventing that.

Will that change anything? I know every single friend and family member rented for years before they bought a house. I can say every single friend and family member took care of those rentals. They cut the grass. Painted. Washed windows. They did not need ownership to incent them.

You can own off reserve if you can find a bank to lend to you , it is very hard for natives . Some of that is there own fault I admit , but you give up your treaty rights .

For the act to change on reserves it has to allow the natives to be there own people no longer under the goverment s care and the land to be truly theres , not on a long term lease arrangement with them . The goverment is very scared to do this as they would surrender all claim to the land , and any oil whatever under on or in it . They have been partitioned at the United Nations to sign the Indigenous Peoples Act they won't . The fear the wrath I guess?

One of the problems that happens with not only the aboriginal people but to anyone who is using welfare as their main source of income is that the housing that they are renting is paid for directly to the landlord by the welfare agencies so the families are not seeing that income in their bank accounts so they don't understand the implications of not paying their rent. If welfare gave the money to the recipients I could see one of two things happening. 1 - they would become responsible for their actions and understand that they have to pay to stay or 2 - they would waste it away and then not have a home to stay in and have an even harder time finding another one as the next landlord would have to then take into account the references of the renter and their renting history. After a while I hope to think that they would become responsible with the money and take some pride in their "rentalship" as opposed to having the agency pay for them.
The agencies not allowing the recipients the responsibility of making these types of choices is another way that the government is oppressing the poor (natives and non natives alike).

That sounds like the government is intentionally oppressing the poor. Does anyone really believe this is happening? What possible motive would a government have to oppress anyone in 2009?

Never saw that one coming... Very Happy

No I saw it and heard it before , at first it was so the resources they wanted could be taken, and now so the goverment will not have to admit to them it was wrong . They are not the only goverment in the same position .

The rape of this land has never paid them anything equally , just look at their lot for the truth. It has always been hand outs and be holding to us and the goverment . Only problem is a change is coming like it or not . In there eyes .

I thought that social services were run by people who are dedicated to helping the poor, not oppressing them. Is it time to rethink the entire social welfare system? Is the safety net too tight that it keeps people in it for the benefit of those who are running it, rather than those who need it?

By Chris Kitching, SUN MEDIA

The former head of an aboriginal health services agency and former co-manager of a reserve is accused of stealing more than $1 million from the organizations, RCMP said today.

Daryl Joseph Cote, 53, of Winnipeg, is charged with two counts of theft over $5,000 and two counts of fraud over $5,000, RCMP said. He was arrested yesterday.

The charges were laid following a four-year investigation by the Winnipeg RCMP commercial crime section that began with a complaint from Health Canada.

Cote is the former CEO of Anishinaabe Mino-Ayaawin (AMA) Inc. and former co-manager of Dauphin River First Nation.

RCMP say Cote allegedly stole $717,900 from AMA between Oct. 1, 1999, and March 31, 2004, and $310,150 from Dauphin River First Nation between Feb. 8, 2001, and Feb. 28, 2004.

AMA delivered health programs and services to seven Manitoba First Nations, which belong to the Interlake Reserves Tribal Council (IRTC).

It was the subject of audits after financial irregularities emerged. The audits covered the period of April 1, 2001, to March 31, 2005.

Ummm, oops. Yet there is bitching galore whenever financial audits are suggested. Wonder what Ron and his pals will say?

Take less of the goverment money to sit in the bush it is a two sided street. And I have native blood in me so Iam not prejudice to either argument .

Only TWO counts of fraud over $5K for over $1M of theft? Should be 200 counts!
