If one of these passengers considers suing for any thing they should be shot . this captain has performed a small miracle to get them down alive over a city .
He has to be commended for the response he took and the thought to put it down there . This could have been so much worse.

Thank God it was a new(er) aircraft. If not, it would have broken up on impact and we'd have some deaths I reckon.

Age of the aircraft is actually not really a factor at all. Maintenance schedules required by the FAA pretty much dictate that a commercial aircraft is pretty much in "showroom" condition for most of it's service life.

That being said, this pilot did one HELL of a fantabulous piece of flying. Considering he apparently struck the birds 40 seconds into the flight and likely lost all power shortly after that, it's damn near a miracle that he was able to guide the plane down to anything resembling a landing given that he likely had only a couple thousand feet of altitude at most to work with. Absolute miracle that he was able to not only guide it to the river, but apparently he stalled it just before it touched down, putting the tail in the water first, thus avoiding ripping the engines off which would have removed the wings as well, leaving the plane to sink.

Hats off to the man, not only for his landing but also for the fact the he walked the length of the cabin TWICE after all passengers were off even as the cabin was filling with water. The guy is a hero all the way. If not for his efforts and skill this likely would have been a story about 155 passengers tragically killed in a horrific crash.

The story about the pilot is just astonishing. Having the presence to take the aircraft away from the populated area, controlling it without one engine working, ditching it safely and then checking the passenger area twice before exiting.

Where do we find people like that, because with all the other crap that goes on around us, he is certainly a rare breed.

Both engines!! Holy sh1t!

I used to fly to Calgary weekly in the days of DC-9's. They said if the engines failed on a DC-9, the aircraft would glide all the way to the scene of the crash.

He had to put that baby down so that both engines hit the water at the same time. Otherwise the plane would flip and probably break-up.
Great job of flying.

What a name the guy has...Chesley B. Sullenburger III.

How many patties will be on the Sullen-burger?

I hope they put cucumbers on it... as in, "cool as a cucumber"

Great grace under fire on that one

heh I would think that especially in New york, especailly after 911 that there are about another 2000 videos of every detail of the crash out there, but since they wont really help the publis much will not be released because it would reveal the location of the cameras.

Bush has someone from the air force working on a missile that will take out the flying birds, especially the communist type, who refuse to move over to a more democratic system .

JTF is old... real real old. So old he taught the geese how to speak in goose. He still knows a couple of geese and they say that friends and family are just devestated. It was just some moms heading to a soccer game an entire team was wiped out.

You'd think with the built-in horns...they would've honked at the plane to get out of the way.

That doesn't make sense...if the engines are quieter, wouldn't it be easier for the pilot to hear the honking?

They probably had the tunes blaring and couldn't hear the screams.
