I've been dragged there numerous times by people claiming it's the best food I'll ever eat, and I've never eaten anything there that I couldn't make better and cheaper at home.

well duh.. I can make pretty much anything from any restaurant better and cheaper at home.

Smile

(except Big Macs, those are impossible to recreate in deliciousness)

I liked the turkey club but it is not the best food available...

That said, I kinda like the idea of them finding a new home somewhere in Winnipeg.

The question is does or should anyone care that they started in 1956 and this waitress bought it a couple of years ago?

She probably hasn't got start-up money? And where does she re-locate?

Maybe she should add $1 per sandwich and put it into her savings drawer?

I enjoyed the sandwich we had there when 5 of the forum members got together there.

When Sals in Tuxedo lost their renewal of their lease I was very sorry for them, but life goes on.

I've been there it was a good sandwich. The restaurant location is pretty good, however the owner has to realize that times be a changing. She needs to find a new location, lots of empty store fronts on Portage. Time to upgrade and invest in the business. If Winnipegger's are as dedicated to this restaurant as they say they are, they will understand why they need to move, and why prices may increase to cover leasing cost increases.

How can it be overrated? it's so cheap and the food is not some crappy Subway sandwich.

There is that empty building on Portage (I think it was manhattan buffet or soemthing like that, near the Dollarama that would probably work out well for them.) Then they can stay open later and catch the post Jets crowd too

I think it is overrated.

Certainly not a place that I would take out of town visitors.

I have had better clubhouse sandwiches at places not "famous" for their sandwich.

Well I am sure that those that enjoy the sandwiches disagree with you Sput. I have zero opinion on it as I've only been there once in recent memory. However if people keep coming back there must be something to it. Maybe you went on a bad day?

I figured.

I get that some people like the sentimental or retro feeling they get at the Wagon Wheel, but to call it a legendary clubhouse is really stretching it.

It's an honest sandwich joint, but nothing worth bragging about.

If it shuts down, we won't be losing anything from a culinary perspective.

I have been there on a number of occasions. The guys at work like to go, so I go with them.

Don't get me wrong. Its a sandwich counter that makes a passable lunch fare. However there is nothing unique about the food that would make me want to recommend it to anyone else.

Name me one other restaurant that provides a comparable turkey clubhouse sandwich in Winnipeg.

Rae & Jerry's. The main ingredient that separates the best from the usual is when they actually roast a turkey as opposed to using sliced deli turkey bologna. The quality and amount of bacon is the other. The assembly is also key. No Clubhouse is good - that falls apart in 10 pieces when you're trying to eat it. Must be level and evenly placed.

Agree with this, but one huge difference, the price!!

I think we need to meet up there and witness Sputnik eating the clubhouse, having the fries and gravy and a milkshake to see if he is really telling the truth about eating one.

The same could be said about Kelekis and any other Winnipeg Restaurant that has been around for a while. Culinary uniqueness isn't what keeps these places going. These places must be doing something right. It may not be the most amazing sandwich you've ever had, but I would fathom that it is consistently good from day to day.

Last time I was at R&J's the club was like $12 and included fries and a pickle.

Not exactly breaking the bank here.

Been to R&Js many times (with Jondo). Never had the clubhouse. I will try it next time. Never been to Kelekis. Been a million years since I've been to Paddlewheel.

I am game to try each and every suggestion put forth...

My wife ( the real clubhouse expert ) has had all of those except Nicks Inn,

She actually rates the Salsibury house one higher then Paddle Wheel and White Star, but the Wagon Wheel is still tops.
