I know the perfect route to build something over that would not require paying anyone for use of the land if you were to just concentrate on the south leg of RT.
Its called ( get this it has a name ) Pembina Highway

But that's my point.

Build right down the middle of Portage Avenue...down the middle of Main, Broadway, etc.

You don't need GIANT rail systems like Chicago has. Think compact...think elegant, think efficient.

Stations don't have to be monstrosities...nothing much more than a glorified bus stop.

And if you read earlier in the thread...make the businesses "buy" stations. If they want a car to stop at their building...they have to build their own station, and maybe even an access rail in.

Look at the pillars/pylons used for support here. They aren't much wider than the walls running down the middle of Portage already...and these are HUGE. We're a smaller city...we don't need 4/5 cars per train...just 1/2 will do...just get more of them running more often.

Let's take all that money and ONLY benefit new undergrads coming into the University. Let's put MORE vehicles on the road and create more gridlock, more road rage, and more bad drivers.

The point of a good public transit system has little to do with the speed to get from point A to point B.

It has to do with overall traffic flow, convenience of use, REMOVING vehicles from an already congested area. The side-benefits of being eco-friendly and economically advantageous really mean nothing to the general public.

Of COURSE buying vehicles will be cheaper NOW...otherwise there would not be so many cars driving around already. But we're not talking about NOW...we're talking about 10 years/20 years from now, when all our kids and grandkids start driving. When exponentially the number of drivers on the road increases, when due to medical improvements people are driving longer in life.

There needs to be a system implemented which will ENCOURAGE drivers to park their vehicles for the "day-to-day" transportation...and save them for only the most necessary trips.

Buses don't do it, they are just as slow as the cars surrounding them.
Trains on the ground would help a bit, but they too are subject to the surrounding terrain.
A well-designed, well-managed elevated system avoids the ground congestion, and provides a clean/safe environment...and costs are coming down as demand increases.

Agreed. My only concern however is that when passenger usage increases, are these elevated systems able to accommodate additional cars to the two or three car "trains" that circulate on the route?

Why not?

Engineers build the systems based on a "weight-per-square-inch/cm"...adding cars does not increase that...just spreads it out.

Generally, the cars won't get bigger, there will just be more of them.

One way to force cars off the road is to make parking downtown prohibitively expensive. Or have fewer spots to park. Or both.

And lots have put money into it, transit can't remember the last time I needed to go to south Wpg fast. Hell I pay enough tax now to keep it afloat . Considering its poor ridership to dollar spent . Razz

Seriously this debate is so old either we do it or we don't Winnipeg needs to make a decision and get off the pot . I never use transit but I know some do and as stated my tax dollars pay for it too .
