This just in... The Sals on the Esplanade Bridge is closing over the winter. I understand this. Business must be terrible as the cold must discourage patrons from the walk...

Wondered why they didn't do this from the begining, not much to be made in the cold out there . At least it is still a summer location and no one loses their job.

Weird on the other site they are wondering why some other restaunt did not go in and how it would be open now if it had . Probaly would if it like to lose money , but where were they when the lease was there to sign

Heh...it just takes some a little longer to catch on Jim.

When it comes to spending other peoples' money, some are prone to being stupid uninformed and frivolous.

Yea Barrish hasn't made it by being stupid, uninformed.

"but where were they when the lease was there to sign"
exactly
Its sat for what 1 year with no tenant? And the only reason a tenant actually went in is because Sammie was elected and switched the gears on who would go in there just make sure it was actually used.

Another great idea by the city. Put a restaruant in a middle of a footbridge. It had "failure" written all over it.

It has not failed HurtinAlbertan. I understand that the restaurant was not going to be open at all over the winter. Give the Sals credit for giving it the old college try. That said it is very successful through the other three seasons.

That bridge and the restaurant were very forward thinking and is a great icon.

They should've put something seasonal there like an ice cream stand.

As has been said before no one came forward for a year after it was built. I'm sure that had Sals not come forward someone else would have. No guarantees they'd be more successful. Personally I'd like a more upscale outfit maybe along the lines of a Keg ( Very Happy ) or something. But it is what it is...

Build a gift shop or something in it's place. I can't really see a restaruant being financially feasible, considering supply and delivery trucks cannot access the footbridge...

That might work. Who knows? Somebody has to take a risk. Put their money forward and take a gamble. Sals did. It is financially feasible. Just not when it's forty below. Not sure I'd walk over there to buy a postcard at -40 either.

WHAT other 3 seasons?

There's winter...and two weeks of not-winter Very Happy.

Sal's has the money to fund a covered (perhaps even heated) walkway to their restaurant.

If they were SMART...they would build it across the entire bridge. Maybe one that opens in the summer so air can flow through?

And...one that is only 6' 6" high so people riding their bicycles will STAY OFF THE SIDEWALK!!!

Maybe a portable heated covered walkway. I'd hate its presence during construction season.

Hey they are going to be there come summer . I give them credit no one else came forward when they were invited and too bad for them now.

I've long gotten over the bridge, but still hear the words of Glen Murray going on how we needed a high end restaurant on the bridge, then we ended up with a Sals, and they can't even make a go of it.

Note to self: Never put any faith in business advice given by career politicians who have absolutely no experience in private business..

Sorry matey, gonna have to correct you on this. I'm a (semi-) regular at that particular Sal's, and every Saturday morning at 8am, there's a Salisbury House-branded 3-ton truck parked on the bridge, just outside the door.

I remember that all the competiors wanted the city to pay, most of the costs for them to go in. They wanted sweetheart deals on the rent to boot .
