This seems like a no brainer for me. My dogs and cats seems to have a way of keeping me chillaxed. I'd love to hear from those that don't have pets. What do you think about these studies?
UBC professor and author Stanley Coren says dogs work better than Prozac, a prescription antidepressant -- and that's no exaggeration.

According to a study published recently in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, the positive effects of having a familiar, friendly dog close by include lowered blood pressure, slowed heart beat and more relaxed muscles -- all signs of reduced stress.

Unlike prescription medications, the positive effects of having a beloved canine close by are also achieved much faster than pills. It took only from five to 24 minutes for people to exhibit signs of reduced stress when they were with their dog, compared with the days or weeks it can take before people benefit from the effects of prescription medications intended to deal with stress and depression, according to Coren's book.

"The data is absolutely unambiguous," Coren said in an interview. "This actually works better than having a loved one next to you."

A growing body of research shows that dog owners -- and seniors, in particular -- make fewer visits to their doctor and are generally more physically active. Seniors who live with a dog are also four times less likely to suffer from depression than those who do not have a dog.

"It's quite an amazing statistic," Coren says.

At the other end of the age spectrum, there are studies that show children who live with dogs are less likely to develop animal-related allergies later in life, and are less likely to develop eczema as well as allergies to dust and pollen.

In terms of general heart health, an Australian study of more than 1,500 people found pet owners had lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels than people who didn't have pets -- even when people in both groups had the same bad health habits, such as smoking and eating a high-fat diet.

Dog ownership is by no means a cure-all to health problems or bad habits. But another study, by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, showed that in men who had had a heart attack for the first time, those who had the companionship of a dog were more likely to be alive four years later than those who did not have dogs.

"The argument was that this was simply the effect of stress reduction," Coren says.

Several studies have shown that children who have some responsibility in caring for a pet are more nurturing, empathetic and socially competent. And, as an unexpected side-effect, they are also generally more popular with their peers.

I can second that. I know I'd be a completely different person if I didn't have my cats.

Some days I prefer my pets to my children. My cats and dog are loving, don't whine and aren't demanding.

There are hypoallergenic dogs, including mine, a Cockapoo. There are even cats that are hypoallergenic. Have ya considered those? I'd highly recommend a Cockapoo. They make wonderful pets/companions.

I do not own pets but I babysit other folk's pets. I find it enjoyable to have pets by proxy. My favourite one to watch over was this crazy chihuahua....she thought she was the biggest bitch on the block! I got to carry her around in a neat bag and she never barked at folks who wanted to pet her.

My little dog would be a GREAT visitor to seniors centres and hospitals if only she didn't leak every time she met someone new. She adores people but piddles when she encounters them. She is much improved now but...

Winnipeg man fears pregnant dog stolen for her pups. How sad is this?

Gut feel tells me the thief knew the dog was pregnant and stole her to make a few bucks off the puppies.

How do they know she was dog-napped as opposed to escaped out the broken-down door? Maybe she's just hiding?

The story said the bad guy had to climb over a locked fence to get out. I assume it was too high for the dog to jump.

I'd heard that before. Dogs have an incredible sensory system for odours and sounds. I just watched a program where a bloodhound tracked someone that drove away. The dog found the person being tracked.

The program said dogs can smell (10 x or 100 x) better than can humans. Bloodhounds (10 x or 100 x) other dogs. They break smells down by odour molecule.

The analogy used was a human smells a stew. A dog smells the carrots and potatoes and meat and individual spices.

So it does not surprise me that a dog would smell something unusual in its owner. But I'd never heard about that in cats. So I'm good. I have three cats and a dog. Who needs the WRHA?

and a bloodhound can smell where the carrots and potatoes were grown, where the beef was raised, and identify the ship that the spices were imported on.... Wink

Pets may be the answer, Doer and the WRHA seem to be unable to keep many of us healthy. Wink
