WINNIPEG - Southdale MLA Erin Selby is the province's new minister of advanced education and literacy.

Selby was sworn into today by Premier Greg Selinger at the Manitoba Legislative Building.

She replaces Diane McGifford, who is not running in the Oct. 4 general election.

Selby said she welcomes the challenge and as a mom of three young triplet girls, she has an appreciation of the province’s education system.

She said she also said she wants to continue to keep tuition affordable and further improve literacy standards.

Selby was elected the MLA for Southdale in 2007.

Prior to her election, Selby earned a degree in journalism at Concordia University and worked for CTV Winnipeg and City TV's Breakfast Television.

Progressive Conservative advanced education critic Mavis Taillieu said Selby’s appointment comes after a decade of neglect by the NDP of its post-secondary institutions and of students.
Wow is right. Is it her communications degree or her experience as a TV host that qualifies her as advanced education minister? And yet Manitobans keep reelecting the ndp. Sigh...

Everybody run out and vote ndp.

Seems an odd time to do it. so what that Gifford is retiring at the end of this current session? Oh right... she will face a tough battle and being in cabinet already will help her win re-election. Sure wish the appointments were about helping the people, not about helping people get re-elected.

But at least she is better then appointing chomiak to yet another position he is not qualified for in anyway.

As a mom of "3 young triplet girls" (funny, I just realized that I have 3 triplet boys, not 2, or 4, but 3 triplets, what a coincidence?), I hope she develops an appreciation for the education system. Maybe she will be provide insight into when "her" children should attend separate classes, or stay together. and if she puts them in separate classrooms, she will see the massive inconsistency in teaching at the same grade level in the same school and think about what it must be like across the entire system

And when her daughters are old enough for post secondary, she will see the bureaucracy and bullshit of the student loan system, where they determine how much parental support must be given to each child, but not factor in that there are at least 2 others in the same household.

I expect great sweeping changes from this former broadcaster.

Surely to God the NDP have someone with an education background for this position? Then again, maybe not, the former Finance Minister was a social worker.

Jeebus.......

Did you see the background. Anyone else think that teachers are way over represented in the NDP MLAs?

With a couple of exceptions, you could describe the NDP MLAs as a bunch of teachers and social workers with a couple of lawyers mixed in.

So much for being representative of the community.

Them that cannot do, teach, and when they cannot teach, they go into politics. Mind you, most still cannot do so that puts the electorate in a bad position.

JTF, it actually goes "Those who can, do; those who can't, teach; those who can't teach, teach gym."

All in jest (except for the NDP connection). Remember, I have 2 teachers in waiting in the family, including 1 gym teacher. #1 daughter graduates this year......finally.

#3 son is holding the faith, battling the bastions of socialism at the U of W, but alas, daughter has been away for many years, and I fear we may have lost one.

My best friends son has now become a socialist...he's a student at the U of W and loves to spew his sh1t. He never wants to hear anyone elses opinion he basically stands on his soapbox and tells the rest of us how we should be living.

I don't doubt these kids are learning. I question what they're learning. It seems many U's are geared towrd churning out socialist zombies. Almost like they've been indoctrinated. Or had lobotomy's.

With the exception of Business and Engineering, most just out of university vote NDP. Of course they have spent years being told how great the NDP designed tuition freeze is working, even though it does nothing for the demographic it is aimed at.

Sounds just like Jack Layton.

I loved it when Jacko was complaining about not getting everything he wanted included in the Budget and Flaherty fired back that he got everything that the fourth party should get.

With no more than 10 or 15 percent in the polls, he does not speak for all Canadians!!!!
