To digress slightly from the thread, but relevant to the articles in the original post, I am gobsmacked that $350,000 is being handed to the Vince Leah CC for field development. VInce Leah has an abundance of space, including 3 full field soccer pitches, 2, mid sized pitches and several ball diamonds. From the soccer perspective, they have maybe 1 soccer team per season, yet no one else is allowed to use their fields. Red River Community Centre is stones throw away, part of a growing area, home of a new CC, but limited field space, yet Vince Leah refuses to let them or anyone else on the fields, in favour of "renting" them to senior leagues.

This is just crap!!

A lack of parking is a big problem in the summer now.
And they are going to lose another 30 - 40 parking spots.
I guess the customers are going to have park in the residential areas.
(Which is already a problem).
The proposed streetscaping is not nearly going far enough. Corydon could be developed into a stroll with old world flair. This would necessitate reduction of the street to one (or 1.5) lane, and a speed limit of 30 km/h for local traffic (residents and deliveries) only. The space can the be utilized by expanded patios in the summer, more trees, benches, and other pedestrian appealing features. This coule become a key location for community events and parades etc. Parking be developed on side and parallel streets.

Yeah, I don't think Corydon can be reduced to one or even one point five lanes. Unless... ...they eliminated all parking on Corydon entirely.

But I like the way you think, it's just not practical as that is the only main feeder road between Grant and Academy.

So, if the parking is completely removed from one side of the road, and angled parking put in on the other side...it will provide more parking spaces, and less congestion for the entire area (ie. no cars stopping in both directions).

and more accidents as people coming from the side with no parking turn around in the middle of the street, cross both lanes and attempt to park.

I suppose that is why we don't see more parallel parking in urban centres.

that and the businesses on the non parking side tend to get a bit pissed that they dont have parking for their patrons.

Has anyone been watching the documentary on the History Channel on Wednesdays?
I think the documentary takes place in India.
If you want to see what driving on Corydon would be like on 1.5 lanes watch that show.
Except the roads in India are up and down a mountain side.
Traffic is absolute chaos.

Hate sounding like a NIMBY but these proposed changes could seriously F'up Corydon even worse than it is now. Unless they come up with a parking plan FIRST then the best solution is to leave things as they are. As someone who has lived in the neighbourhood for the last decade I've had the privellege of seeing what the traffic situation turns into every May-Sept. for people who actually live in the area. Good luck crossing Corydon in <5 mins anywhere between Daly and Lilac on any summer evening. There is no where near enough parking currently to meet the present demand, removing parking will only add to the amount of people circling within a 3 block radius on either side of Corydon.

IMHO the best thing to do before commencing any sort of street scaping that would remove parking spaces would be to secure more parking, wether it be a surface lot or parkade structure of some sort. I think the Corydon Biz members should put their own money together and do as GOM suggests and look at buying up a lot or 2 as they become available on one of the streets parallel and build a small parkade prior to lauching this type of project using public funds. I don't agree with using public funds to make the traffic situation worse in the neighbourhood if the local business's that are pushing for the change are not willing to poney up some funds to negate the negative consequences of said changes.

If the adress the parking/traffic situation first using their own money then I'm all for the changes. If we're using $300K of public funds to screw things up even worse then F' that.

It sounds like you actually have a vested interest in what happens on the Corydon Strip.
I guess you don't want another traffic circle situation.
Speaking of traffic circles, were the traffic circles and other traffic diversions in place during last summers tourist season?
Perhaps you should be speaking to the people who are planning to do the street-scapping before "the shovel hits the ground".

They could buy up a couple of houses right next door to your house and put in the parking lot. I'm sure you'd be okay with that....especially on a Friday or Saturday night. Just say'n.

Remember. These are the same people that got a few million for streetscaping just a few years ago. They built all those brick-set-in-concrete sidewalks that are falling apart and need replacing again.

JTF, trust me a parkade next door would be no worse than the current situation. At least it would give people a place to stop and actually park rather than endlessly circle around the entire neighbourhood looking for a spot. I would actually prefer it to the current state of things. As someone mentioned perhaps have MTS open up their lot in the evenings or put in a multi-level pay lot in their current location. Win-win for everyone. MTS get's some extra revenue, the neighbourhood sees less traffic, local business's have somewhere for their patron's to park. I'm not against development, just agains anything that aggrivates the situation further. It's a zoo down here at times in the summer with all the people looking for parking. Taking away parking would only make it worse.

I've lived in the area for many, many years (bought my house in '64) and know of the traffic problems first hand. I also know of the vandalism that also results from too many drunks walking around.
