I particularly like this part:
"Before the streetscaping plan can move forward, we might have to lose
between 30 and 40 parking spaces. But then we will eventually generate
many more spaces, so the whole process will take time and patience," von
Stackelberg said.

A lack of parking is a big problem in the summer now.
And they are going to lose another 30 - 40 parking spots.
I guess the customers are going to have park in the residential areas.
(Which is already a problem).

And how they intend to generate another 200 parking spots when the whole damn area is already developed. As far as I know there are no empty lots.
I guess the extra 200 parking spots will also be in the residential area. Sad

Some more NIMBYism? This is what stalls development in Winnipeg.

The Corydon strip is one of Winnipeg's more dynamic areas. It needs to be properly managed and it sounds like planning and thought might actually be going into it. That's a good thing in my books. It is more of a pedestrian area anyway and that's attractive to people. Indeed they can't create enough condo's in the area. It must not be that big an impediment.

There are several areas of Toronto that are heavily visited by people that live outside the area AND by people who've actually moved to those areas because of the traffic. The city creates parking lots behind the shops and beautifies them. It works well for everyone. Winnipeg could use a few more such areas.

The same NIMBYism is rearing its ugly head across the tracks near the new BRT station on the rail lands. That development is bloody good for the city but too many Winnipeggers will cut off their noses just to spite their faces.

That Tim's is open now. I did not see anyone standing around with a hood carrying a sickle...

There isn't any place that can absorb the loss of parking spots.

Already the side streets are full of 'visitors' to the area, so just where this will be made up I'd sure like to see.

1. Where are they going to get the land if they intend to create parking lots behind the shops?
2. Why don't they create the parking lots before they take the 30 or 40 lots out of circulation?
3. Where are they going to get the money to buy the land to create the parking lots? I believe this 300 grand is only for street-scapping?

In Toronto they took out a row of two or three houses in behind. They could do that every three or four blocks.

See above...

I don't know.

I don't know.

I'd like to try to find a solution rather than dismiss it.

Corydon Street Scaping $300,000 Quartz_crystal

A quartz crystal like this you can buy from Radiance...close enough looking to an icicle.

But seriously....if this is Winnipeg we're talking about, they'll probably end up demolishing a much beloved building on Corydon Ave., something that really defines it...and build a multi-storey parkade on the site.

You forgot to add the people who define the building as "much beloved" would not actually own the building.
They just want to tell other people how to spend their hard-earned money. Exclamation

Way to go fear-mongers! It's not enough we have too many NIMBYers amoungst us. Now we invent problems.

Ummm, where is this much-beloved building you so care about? Right. Doesn't exist. Parkade? Not likely. Cost's too much money.

JTF...you need to think in a different box.

The proposal is to take away "parallel" parking, and put in "angled" parking.
By doing so...you would basically get 2.2 parking spaces for every current 1.

Is that what they are proposing AA? Hadn't heard that. I considered it though.

I can't see how they'll free up space for that. The sidewalks are not that big that they can afford to lose real estate to parking.

Perhaps they'll borrow parking spots from MTS evenings and weekends. Perhaps they'll expropriate some houses on McMillan and build a surface lot or two (although not for $300k...).

Has anyone measured to ensure Corydon is wide enough to have angled parking safely ?

Kicking Granny out of a house she has lived in 50 years just to create parking for merchants on Corydon just because the city can't get their planning and spending act together.
And where is Granny going to go with the rental situation being what it is?
Better to just kill the street scapping project and keep the existing parking where it is.
Actually saving money. What a unique concept.
And if the merchants want to "beautify" the street, they can kick in a grand each and keep the taxpayer out of it.

maybe just close down one of the businesses in the busier section for the extra parking.

Let me paraphrase for you: "Better to do nothing at all." "I like doing nothing." "I hate growth." "I hate change."

Too many people with that attitude I'm afraid.

Why absurd? Because there is no space? Because you don't like angeled parking? Because accident rate will increase exponentially?

Imagine backing out from one of the spots.

Besides you need an extra lane for that type of parking.

To digress slightly from the thread, but relevant to the articles in the original post, I am gobsmacked that $350,000 is being handed to the Vince Leah CC for field development. VInce Leah has an abundance of space, including 3 full field soccer pitches, 2, mid sized pitches and several ball diamonds. From the soccer perspective, they have maybe 1 soccer team per season, yet no one else is allowed to use their fields. Red River Community Centre is stones throw away, part of a growing area, home of a new CC, but limited field space, yet Vince Leah refuses to let them or anyone else on the fields, in favour of "renting" them to senior leagues.

This is just crap!!
