Winnipeg Free Press

WINNIPEG -- The East Elmwood Community Centre -- a neighbourhood institution -- has been destroyed by fire this morning.
Firefighters will likely be at the scene of the blaze on Beach Avenue all day, but the structure has been ravaged by flames.

The centre is located in the 900 block of Beach near Kent Road School. The fire was called in about 4:30 a.m. by Winnipeg police officers who spotted it during an early morning patrol.

Heavy smoke forced the evacuation of about a half-dozen homes on the north side of Beach near the centre. A warm transit bus is accommodating residents forced out of their homes.

There is no word yet on a cause of the fire.

By 7:45 a.m., flames were still shooting out of the building. Firefighters are literally wading through a huge pool of water that has accumulated while they battle it.

Sandi Bonin lives just behind the club but hasn't been asked to leave her home. She was awakened by her husband just after 6 a.m., because they thought the neighbour's garage was on fire.

But Bonin quickly realized the community club where she played sports as a child was engulfed in flames.

"I thought, 'Oh my God... that's the club,'" she said. "The fire is huge... it's gone.

Bonin said if the club is destroyed, a little piece of her will be gone, too.

"I grew up at that club. There's a picture of me in there, when I played with a baseball team. It's sad."

It's believed the club was built in the 1950s.

Parents of children at Kent Road School should be advised the school is closed today, according to a Winnipeg School Division spokeswoman.

The community centre also housed a daycare centre.

Maybe an opportunity to expand/renovate Chalmers which is only a 20 minute walk away. Less infrastructure, new infrastructure, designed to todays standards to meet todays needs, amalgamate boards, reduce operating costs.

I know, all those reasons don't matter. Everyone needs an old, dilapidated community centre in their neighbourhood which is rarely open, doesn't meet the needs of the community so they can b1tch to the city about underfunding.

Well you know that it is fully insured and at replacement cost, so the new one should be better able to look after the local needs of the community!
This is good news!

They knew it was arson that morning though.
They were saying it on CBC all morning that footprints had been found leading up to and away from the building in the fresh snow, and that other signs of arson were apparent and that the arson investigators had been called.

don't know why that's "breaking news" yesterday.

why the shock? or why the arson?

I thought I heard somewhere that the daycare was new to the building.

I'd start an investigation with the parents of kids who USED to be in that daycare, and may have been kicked out recently. From dealing with my daughter's daycare...there are many people who refuse to pay, or have other issues (drugs for example) and have to be asked to not return...and they can get pretty irate.

Why the daycare though? Because they are the newest tenant...and therefore have the most recent change.

But also look at ex-workers, or some kid who may have been kicked out of the community center recently for some reason...or if the cc has a team of some kind...check out a team they may have recently beaten.

or, just a senseless, wanton act of vandalism.

I agree. It was an act by somebody that had a bone to pick or not. Smile
