Fascinating coverage of a Country with 84 million citizens complaining about "Regime" change!

The last thing Egypt, or the Middle East, needs is the Muslim Brotherhood to take control of the country. The uprising may have been a movement by the people, but it's being hijacked by extremists. Who else would have damaged things in the Egypt Museum?

The poor people are trying to get something to sell, so they can buy some food?

I wonder if Mubarak will seek asylum in Canada too?

Wink, the last thing this planet needs are politicians who won't budge out of their positions after several decades.

Mubarak has had major influence & power since ... 1975.
That's 35+ years.

Time for change.

Time for a non-USA supported leader.

See what happened in Iran in 1979?
That was a good thing ... getting rid of the monarchy, and separating from any kind of US (foreign policy and military) policy.

The US is like the SHAW Cable of the world... Whatever they touch turns to S**t

What we are seeing is no longer democracy in action. People are having to set up armed groups just to defend their neighborhood from these so called "demonstrators". It may have started off as a legitimate demonstration, one that was poorly responded to by the government. But now? Its just another brute force group trying to take power. Afghanistan suffered terribly under this type of group taking power. National monuments, historic to the world were destroyed and with Egypt being a country engulfed in history it will be terrible when that happens there.

There are two seperate groups out there apparently...looters and demonstrators..and the looters are getting their asses kicked.

The demonstrators are being left alone, even by the army and what's left of the police.

The idiots who want a democracy are demonstrating peacefully! The looters are the ones that have broken out of jail, and with no police are out to get free stuff!
deanK's take on this situation is wrong!
Mubarek won't quit! He has been in power almost 30 years, without a VP, because the president when he has a VP, gets killed, so the VP can run things! lol
Mubarek has been offered Canada, but said he is scared of Harper! lol

It's good to see the government has changed its policy on evacuees.

There are planes available but you must pay your own way out.

Lesson learned from that crap in the past eh. Smile

You know... sure some people are demanding the guy leave, but usually the people supporting a politician or a political movement won't go to the length of actually demonstrating so does the ENTIRE country want change? or just a smaller percentage? Democracy is NOT about the most vocal getting their way, its about the people as a group deciding what is to be done.

When there is a threat of violence Democracy is not in action.

Imo, back in the 50's, the Egyptians just replaced the name for the King with that of President.

Since the army is under the control of the President, I reckon Mubarak has been having an easy time getting "re-elected".

I think that the Egyptians want more than just faces changed. They want real reforms.

especially when you read stuff like this

http://www.winnipegsun.com/news/world/2011/01/31/17096561.html

"
CAIRO, Egypt — Egyptian-Canadians are arriving here, worried and
nervous about their families who have encouraged them to get here Monday
during a time of relative stability.
One man, Mohamed Naem, an Egyptian-born Montrealer, said he hopes to help more of his family in Egypt to immigrate to Canada.
QMI Agency and TVA reporters travelled here from London, England, Monday.
Canadians are arriving here despite a warning form the Canadian government against all non-essential travel."
We damn well better NOT give anyone a ride home even if they are paying for it, if they arrived after we told them not to go.

well, the civilians can do whatever they want with their politicians...that's a mess all of it's own.

But at least there are still some sane folks still trying to preserve Egyptian history: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/30/looters-in-cairo-museum-a_n_816095.html

revolutions
are historically often preceded by sharply rising prices, especially
food prices. In developing nations food represents a much larger portion
of people's living costs than in developed nations, hence the level of
food prices is a far more important factor in overall economic
wellbeing. One could say that Egypt's despot Mubarak is now harvesting
the fruits of the inflationary policies pursued all over the globe since
(and before) the 2008 crisis.

...

Given
that Mubarak is 82 years old and has stolen some $50 billion for his
family in the course of his political career, we expect him to soon be
aboard a plane leaving Egypt for friendlier climes. Deposed autocrats
carrying the necessary small change always find a place to retire to.

His only other choice is a bloody crackdown with the help of the army -

I'm reserving judgment a little longer to see how this is going to play out. They deserve a chance before condemnation.

""I don't think there's a majority for the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. On the other hand, what you've got to watch is that they are extremely well-organized and well-funded whereas those people who are out on the street at the moment, many of them will be extremely well-intentioned people but they're not organized in political parties yet. So one of the issues in the transition is to give time for those political parties to get themselves properly organized," he said.

"People want a different system of government. They're going to get it. The question is what emerges from that. In particular I think the key challenge for us is how do we help partner this process of change and help manage it in such a way that what comes out of it is open minded, fair, democratic government," he said."

- Former British PM Tony Blair

Can anyone explain the set up of the government and how would elections end up with a democracy?
Would we send them Harper to run as an example?
