actually makes sense.

you know what would make more sense?

Cops handing out tickets to people under 18 smoking...seems like an easy place to find em eh?

or what would make even MORE sense...is to get rid of the stupid laws prohibiting smoking and stop harassing people!!!

Although I am in total agreement with the anti-smoking bylaws, I also have no problem with what Steinbach RSS is doing. They are trying to be socially responsible to the tax paying community around them by saying, OK we have heard your concerns (the garbage, etc being strewn on the community at large) and are going to try to reduce it by having a designated smoking area for staff and students. As well now the staff and students will not be smoking outside the front doors to the school, they will be in a location that is not always used by the general public and should also help to maintain an easy clean up for the custodial staff.

heh.. when going to school I always found it so amusing that the teachers who were the ones patrolling the school grounds to make sure no kids were smoking on the grounds were the ones who were smoking inside the teachers lounge or in their own cars in the parking lot.

heh I have seen teachers bum smokes from the smoking kids too.

stupid rules. Smile

but the best was when the total ban came into effect and the kids simply moved from the sidewalk in front of the school to across the street and sent the residents completely insane so much that the school was forced to ignore school board mandates.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I went to a high school here in Winnipeg that had it's own large smoking room inside the building that both the staff and students used (used to sit with Harvey Smith when he was a teacher back in the early '80's). When I became a teacher in the early 90's, there was no smoking allowed inside the school building but both staff and students alike were allowed to smoke at the parking lot doors of the local high school that I taught at. Now this high school has a designated area that is on the city boulevard that their custodial staff is responsible for cleaning up but does not affect the local residents in that the boulevard is still on the same side of the street as the school. If I were to reside across from a high school, I would far sooner have the school/division have a designated smoking area set up that have my property damaged by careless and inconsiderate staff and students. Just my opinion and thoughts.

Ban smoking of all kind on school property. Then forbid students from leaving school property during school hours. Problem solved...

Is smoking really still seen as "cool"??

Maybe that's the problem.

the smoking "bans" the tick me off are the ones in seniors homes and in hospitals.

people are addicted. Forcing them to suffer withdrawal throes of their addiction because of being sick or getting to that stage of your life where you need to enter a home is just wrong.

The rate people are smoking is dropping like a lead balloon. Last numbers I recall seeing for Canada were something like 20%. If ya figure Quebeckers and younger peeps form the highest percentage of smokers the numbers for the general population must be quite small, relatively speaking.

The problem is more so the non-smokers. Is there is an affordable way to allow the sick and elderly smoke in hospitals and nursing homes?

yup. its called a smoking room. Most of them still have one. Why? because patients that were in the homes before the ban came into effect can still continue to smoke in them.

for most groups I dont object too much to the ban. But ESPECIALLY for retired veterans its an asshat idea.

WE FRICKEN GOT THEM ADDICTED for christs sake.

Nerves?Calmed by smoking
Hunger pains? Calmed by smoking.
Alertness? Increased by smoking.

We forced this addiction on some of these guys and gals, least we could do is continue to respect them enough to allow them to still smoke.
