I recently watched an HBO special on the Washington and Pittsburgh NHL teams. Called 24/7 it could also be called F-Bomb 24/7.

http://www.hbocanada.com/247penguinscapitals/

Never have I seen anything like this. While it is most definitely compelling to watch two such great teams, especially during such opposite on-ice dynamics, the sheer over-use of the F-Bomb is distracting to the point of turning it off.

It was almost comical to watch Bruce Boudreau literally use the F-Bomb every second word; in the dressing room, on the bench, on the airplane, in the GM's office. It became a joke when every second player dropped the word as they celebratorily walked into their dressing room after ending an 8 game losing skid. During that walk, in Ottawa, every second player screamed f-this and f-that, in front of the fans, including kids.

Not a prude by any stretch of imagination, I've dropped more than my share of F-Bombs. But my god, have we all become so used to this word that we need to use it is such a manner?

Some will tell you it's just a word. Others will dismiss the over-use of the F-Bomb. Still others will cringe with its every utterance.

Have we become insensitive to the thoughts and feelings of others when we cavalierly drop that word?

Personally I don't like the over-use of the word. I find it offensive when dropped too frequently. When used with discrimination it sure packs a wallop into a sentence.

Used otherwise it leaves a much different impression on people.

Thoughts?

That's only the tinyset of the problems out there...
Getting shot, stabbed, raped, tortured, whatever... might be the biggest problems.
Even primary school kids are using harsh language nowadays...

Let me ask you this, because it's no big deal to some, is it okay to ignore that it may offend others?

Yup. Fu uck being politically correct or worrying about little girlie feelings all the time. If people are offended by someone's use of words, then they have the problem. Wink

I have to side with GOM on this one. While I for one may not be terribly offended by use of the F-word, many people are. I think the level that some people use the word is ridiculous, especially when used as a filler word in everyday conversation in inappropriate places such as public places frequented by children. People really should start trying to exhibit some degree of civility and manners when out in public at least.

If you want to throw around the F-word 7 times in a sentance in a bar, on a construction site or when in your home with your friends I could care less. There are definitely appropriate times and places for that kind of language, the problem is that many people seem to have forgotten that it's not really the time to be using that type of language while your standing in line to see Toy Story 3 at Silver City.

Offended? I don't know if that's the right word for it. Dropping f-bombs constantly is more a reflection on the speaker's intelligence, I believe.

Intelligence? Yeah. Immaturity? That too. Maybe petulance also?

NOT using it shows dignity and respect.

Well, I've been in a lot of boardrooms, with a lot of business elite, and I've been in dozens of meetings with rooms full of PhDs, and believe me, the word fu uck gets used a hellava lot.

As a matter of fact, in many circles it is a 'bonding' word. Once you get beyond the niceties of introductions, you eventually use crusty language to show you are close.

Although I haven't been involved heavily in business-like matters for some years, I still see this practice today

As a matter of fact, on a recent business trip, this exact thing happened...and it happened through interpreters.

Irony.....gotta love it. I would bet the farm that some who extol the virtues of certain kinds of bonding mechanisms would not be doing so if the word was being uttered by women in the same board meeting. For some odd reason there still exists a double-standard when it comes to the "fairer" sex using that word. That being said, copious use of it diminishes the effect of said word....in other words using the word f**k as a punctuation mark as opposed to using it as a noun or an adverb.

The use of the "F word is common in common people, who perhaps have a very low vocabulary!
The use of that word around fans is unforgiveable!
In business meetings? I have never heard it ever used and that goes back to 1968!

I don't notice it uttered by women anywhere near the frequency men use it. And when infrequently uttered it has significantly greater impact.

I work in a "trade" environment and it is indeed used too frequently. I also noticed that when asked (rare) they stop using it.

I too have been in dozens of board/executive meetings and can't recall that word used although I'm certain it has.

But if asked I'll respect people's wishes and watch my language. To do otherwise is boorish, rude and ignorant.

I agree with the above-two posts in that I have RARELY ever heard the f-word dropped in a board room....and I have served on many boards in the course of over 25 years. What purpose would it serve to engage in the many grammatical permutations of that word? Yes, I have heard it uttered in frustration during breaks when consensus could not be reached, yet, but to have heard it uttered in the context of a business meeting, especially one where one was dealing with regional delegates of whom they were not on a first-name basis with? Nah, I am not buying that aforementioned assertion (or is it hubris) of some sort of bonding occurring during business amongst "elites".

That being said one day, and it was a very cold day, a colleague and I (he has a PHd in Geology) decided to play the grammar game with the f-word.....we came up with 11 variations.

JTF, are you saying that all of us are rank amateurs, limited only to "community" boards compared to your vast well of worldly experiences? Please share with us this wonderful world of the "business elites" who know how to cuss and bond with their fellow men so well. lol!

Anybody remember this?....from wiki

On March 23, 2010, U.S. vice president Joe Biden whispered into President Barack Obama's ear, "This is a big fricking deal" when referring to the U.S. health care reform bill. His words were picked up by microphones and video.[32]

On May 3, 2010, Canadian senator Nancy Ruth advised representatives of women's groups to "shut the frick up on" access to abortion, in the run-up to the 36th G8 summit.[33]

Yes, that may be so but what of your "business elite" circle and experiences? Anyone with a computer I am sure can find all sorts of dropping of the f-bomb instances by those who walk in more rarified circles. I am however very curious as to your personal examples as I am sure are others who disagree with your assertions. After all, just because you say so, does not make it so the world-over.

I gotta say that even though I've not seen too many boardrooms and executive meetings laced with the f-bomb the whole point of this thread is that it is becoming more commonplace. I have no doubt about the veracity of f-bomb claims that some have encountered.

"becoming more commonplace"- That is a statement that simply gets the "facts not in evidence" label from me!
Was there a government agency of Harper's that had some Conservative think tank spend $1,200,000 to check it out?
NO! Harper wouldn't waste our taxpayer money.
There is no coroborating evidence of that statement!

If you swear a lot, the swear words lose their potency. People who hardly every swear - if they drop an f-bomb, people pay attention!! To me, THAT should be the point. Not just lack of intelligence or eloquence. But save it for when it is truly warranted.

Imo, it has already lost its potency and become part of mainstream language.
