I think that they were living in the basement of a house.
From seeing the problem venting on TV, it looks as though somebody did a piss poor job of taping the seams. Looks like a YIY job to me.
So...relax...no need to panic...but a CO detector is a great idea anyway.

YES...but...
A CO detector should NOT be placed near the furnace.
It's supposed to be placed near the sleeping area, or a hall leading to that area.
In THIS case though...if they are "living" in the basement...there would be no choice...but quite obviously it would be a case not just of poor workmanship...but of allowing anyone to "live" in a basement like that....so in general some stupidity.

It was a crappy repair job people living there has no bearing on it , less they were stealing heat from the chimney

There was no tape on an adjustable elbo, along with a couple of screw holes I noticed...dangerous DIY nonsense.
Dumbass DIYselfers should stay away from electrical, plumbing, and HVAC for sure....stick to fu ucking up tiles wallpaper eh. lol

The (Global I think) newscast said the work was done by a contractor. That contractor would not return the reporters phone calls.

My house, that i moved into was 100% do It yourself, and do it out of the cheapest, incorrect materials.
Ehen our contractor came up from the crawlspace (cellar), he told my wife that she could have her bathroom located anywhere she wanted because all the plumbing connections were below minimum standards! That was the good news?
When I phoned the gas company to inquire about the gas furnace, they advised me that there was no record of natural gas being used in the house!
