No problemo GOM. PC Anti-Virus Software - Page 2 76321

I agree, there's a limit to the support one can expect from free products, however anti-virus is something that needs to work, right below the operating system in priority IMO. To AVG's credit, they do have a tech support KB ware they regularly attempt to assist us non-paying customers.

At the very least there are a few things you could try, if you still can't get it to work then I'd move on to Avast or Kaspersky as an alternative.

Shaw is our service provider and because of that we have free internet security package that we downloaded onto all our computers. It allows us 5 free downloads.

I wonder what AV software people have to use at work. We use Symantec.

I refused the shaw one because during the download process it asked my if I had removed all other anti virus and answering the question was required to download the software. That information being none of their damn business I refused to answer.

The downside to Shaw Secure (which is the free one Shaw provides that Holly uses) is the overhead, I'm told. Apparently, it slows down your computer.

We use Symantec at work as well. As for the slow down of my computer, I haven't noticed a difference on any of our computers and I look at it this way, as long as I am secure and protected from viruses, I will use it. I spend all day on the computer at work, fixing, repairing and teaching people how not to screw things up that I don't want to be doing the same at home. I have better things to do.

yeah...the Shaw one really sucks...and the sad part, if you talk to the right Shaw tech support...is that Shaw is basically the pay-version of AVG, and a copy of Spybot included, along with some other thing that uses up WAY too many resources for an AV program

I used it for the first few months after I got Shaw...and then removed it when things started bogging down...now I simply use AVG & Spybot and have had no real issues.

At work we use TrendMicro...which is actually junk too...but I think was chosen to try and lock me out of changing my registry and due to pure paranoia from management.

Shaw uses F-Secure, at least that is what they say on their website. Maybe they just switched.

Yeah, Holly, none of us want to waste time fixing our systems due to malware. I'm glad that you have a solution that works for you.

Shaw provides F-Secure which is VERY heavy on system resources and can pretty much make an older XP system useless. MTS provides ZoneAlarm, which I have been using for about 4 years now (not from MTS though) with very little issues. ZoneAlarm includes the Kaspersky anti-virus and spyware approach. Microsoft Security Essentials is supposed to be excellent and free, and users I have talked to are very happy with it.

well, then i've been lied to again by tech support.

i called because i was having issues with shawsecure and wanted a "scaled back" version without all the garbage.

the guy replied by saying it was a "package", but if i wanted basics, i should get AVG & Spybot, because that's what the "package" really was anyway, along with a couple extra things.

Guess I took him too literally.

Either way...won't ever put that garbage on my computer again.

Seriously though, I will echo the sentiments expressed concerning Avast. Haven't had a problem once with the program.

The only time a virus has given me trouble was a week ago (my own fault)... a piece of malware (Think Point Anti-Virus) installed itself via a Java/Adobe Reader exploit while I was on Facebook... was a b1tch to remove, had to manually edit the registry when all removal tools failed.

I wonder if there is any truth to the different software instructions telling you to remove all other anti spyware programs because it "may" interfere with our program?
When someone says "may" that tells me that they "may" be lying to you!

There are no guarantees in life, which is why they say "may." The only guarantee, though, is Isreel bonds! They have a perfect rate of repayment.

Unintsll everything rosen except Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. And use only Firefox as your browser. And don't download anything ever again. And if you do scan it FIRST before opening it.

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4716-malwarebytes-anti-malware.html

Once downloaded, and before you do anything else, run a whole system scan.

That is all for now.
