STUPID CAT!!!

So on Monday my cat got injured. Big gash on the inside of the left rear leg and dislocated the right rear leg. $505 later she comes home Tuesday morning. Stitch in the left leg and the right leg in a sling.

So... she cant really move around hardly so we have to take her out of the place she is in and put her in the litter box and all that fun stuff.

And I think we all know the pitiful meowrrwrwrrwr that comes out of a cat kept in a "cage" anyway last night trying to go to sleep.

get out of bed. Go and open the "cage" to get he to come to the edge so I can take her to the litter box and she just lies down looking at me all pitiful like.

Doesn't want food
Doesn't want water
Doesn't want to use the washroom

just wants to be held.

sigh.


so I layed on the floor holding her with one hand in the "cage" until she fell asleep. Must have been 20 minutes.

I am thinking she was fighting another cat and fell off the fence.. vet is not sure but thinks probably car.

Not my decision is she is an inside cat. That is hers.

a) get the surgery and go even further in to debt pretending that the cat is 5 years old and that 5 year old cats go on to live long long fruitful lives.
b) put the cat to sleep
c) let the cat live with her dislocated hip

a)

choice would be (b) or (c)

(c) would be preferable IF there was no significant pain involved for the cat.

i'm confused though...a dislocation can be fixed without surgery...it just needs to be relocated...can usually be done with an anesthetic and a "pop" back into joint.

and i'll even expand though...i don't care if i WAS doing so well financially...$500 for ANY operation or treatment is my cap for animal treatment. I can get a new cat or dog for free any day of the week...but $500 is a year's worth of several of my household bills...and anything more than that is a waste for an animal who's too dumb to stop jumping off the window ledge and dislocating a hip!!

I know that is expensive but pets are a part of the family. I would pay what it takes.

I had a cat that had diabetes. The first time it was discovered it cost me $1000 to save his life. After a couple years of daily insulin shots he had a relapse and it cost me another $1000. And three years ago he had another relapse that cost more than a thousand dollars. He did not survive the last one.

I would have gladly paid another $1000 if it would have saved him.

I will also gladly donate $100 to the save Deank's cat fund...

STUPID CAT!

she was lying their bitching about her hip Friday night as I was brushing her and I told her, well maybe if you were not such a freakin princess and actually crossed the street instead of prancing across like you owned it this wouldn't have happened so shut the hell up and quit your whining.

She twitched her tail twice, laid her head down and stared off into space. Maybe I can put a video online and show her as the most human like cat on earth of something.

a couple of months ago, our cat got crystals (for those that don't know...basically it's small particles built up in his urethra and he can't pee)

so it's incredibly painful for him...and over time could be deadly.

of course he starts whining about it at 6pm on a friday night...so we can't just call our vet...

so i take him down to the animal hospital on pembina at 11pm on friday night...

JUST to walk in the door and have exam costs $150...

but i called first, and got options and pricing...
to actually have him go in for surgery...$2k
plus tests...$500
plus the exam...$75
plus the "after hours"...$75

but i took him anyway...figuring i was putting him down that night...my wife even said "goodbye" to him as I left...and made me promise that I wouldn't kill the cat on the way to the vet to save the $75 exam fee.

As it turns out...I lucked out...the vet that night actually seemed to care...and he gave me an option I wasn't presented over the phone.

For $50, he would give the cat a "local", and then crush the crystals in the urethra by hand...and squeeze the bladder till the cat started peeing on his own.
Plus another $100 for medicine and some "urinary" cat food.

So...for about $350 (with taxes), the cat was all fixed...drugged up...and going home...and I've been ADAMANT about the cat getting the right food so we don't have to do it again.

But THAT'S my limit...and in this case..it wasn't his fault. He was eating the food we gave him, believing we were feeding him healthily and reasonably.

Had it been for something stupid...like going out and getting hit by a car, or fighting with the dog...then I wouldn't have had any sympathy for him...nor would I have been likely to put out that kind of money to save him.

And...to top it off...we had JUST (one week before) gotten a new kitten...so we'd still have a cat if we had put him down.

I've gone into debt paying for vet bills (including a $1500 bill to find out my cat was constipated), but I would happily do it all again.

How old is the cat, really? I like animals, and I hate allowing them to suffer, so the only option for me would be to either fork out the money or euthanize the cat. If the cat is already up in years and not tremendously healthy, I'd probably have the cat euthanized. If the cat was otherwise healthy, and had many years ahead, I'd see if the vet would allow me to arrange a payment plan or something.

Decisions like this suck. I dread having anything happen to the dog because of the tremendously high cost.

I have health insurance for my dog. Twice I considered canceling the insurance but changed my mind.
