Its part of the Winnipeg Charter Act even for city employees

They (City and provincial) employees can go on unpaid leave to run for office, should they win, their job is held for them until such time as they are no longer in office.
4, 8, 12 whatever years. They have a guaranteed job waiting for them when booted out or they decide to no longer win.

and... did you know, the regional MP's in my area, will get a pay cut of almost $500 / month starting next year?
Like, they only get $17000 / month pay... so what difference will the cut make...
Italy is in big trouble...

Well, that answers my question re: Casey Jones.

Since he stays as an employee, he would need to recuse himself from any votes that have any financial implication.

Interesting thought, but he's not technically an employee as the employer-employee contract is no longer in place. But I agree with your point.

/derails the topic on a wild tangent

Is there really an unfortunate soul named Casey Jones running? Anyone familiar with this horrible Grateful Dead song?

Casey Jones - Grateful Dead

Driving that train, high on cocaine,
Casey Jones YOU BETTER, watch your speed.
Trouble ahead, trouble behind,
And you know that notion just crossed my mind.

This old engine makes it on time,
Leaves Central Station 'bout a quarter to nine,
Hits River Junction at seventeen TO,
At a quarter to ten you know it's DRIVIN' again.

Driving that train, high on cocaine,
Casey Jones YOU BETTER, watch your speed.
Trouble ahead, trouble behind,
And you know that notion just crossed my mind.

Poor sucker. What a crappy name combo.

Now, don't get me wrong, theres nothing wrong with anyone putting in an honest days work for an honest days pay, but I understand that Casey Jones is a very nice man that works in solid waste management, if you know what I mean, and there is no way I want him as my councillor.

Did they leave city ranks? The city of Winnipeg Charter seems pretty clear.

Sorry, didn't read the post fully. Depends how long the term of the elected office is for. City only has to hold job for 8 yrs. If provincial and is 4.5-5 yrs between elections, then I could see the end of city employment as second elected term would be over 8 yrs.

Anyway, wrote a blog post on it last night:

But then again the conflict isn't as strong when you are a city employee on leave to sit as an MLA.

Remember, this is a city employee on leave to sit as a councilor.

on accountability

It seems one of my current school trustees is running again for trustee

She lists that she is currently a teacher
She is currently the head of the parent council association for luxton

Now...how can those be good things? Wouldn't at least the parent council head be a little bit of a conflict?
