What part of this do you have issue with?

The only part I would want changed is that the city could perhaps offer some short term financing at cost to people who are ordered to fix up their house and cant afford it. Sure there are some parts of the law that dont make sense why its required (like say minimum closet size and such) but this house was well beyond those ideas.

The house was derelict, unfit for habitation and had no heat, electricity or water. The owner was asked several times to get the structure back up to code, but refused.

Why should the city act any differently?

Had this been a rooming house or a crack house, you would be happy for the demolition. Just because someone is an eccentric film maker, doesn't make him immune to any bylaws or regulations.

i dont understand why he never moved his piano or his boxes of films out.

surely he has connections that some art group would have taken them and stored them for him?

There's more houses that the city should take the same action. "Quiet enjoyment" of property is one thing, owing a health and fire hazard is something else.

He was given reasonable time to correct the deficiencies.

9 months seems pretty dang reasonable eh?

I found it odd that according to the article he is still fighting to put his name on the ballot for the civic election.

Dude is a flake. The city needs to be more proactive in such cases. Too many boarded up/derelict houses in the city.

I guess his calendar was still in the house when they demolished it. Smile

According to the article in the WFP, he owns a few other properties.

well... he did live in it all winter without services to prove it was not derelict.

I wonder though if the city could have at least waited until after the election.. you know to get around this whole "unfairly targeted" thing?

kind of hard for the dude to be fighting his nomination paper thing and this at the same time. Regardless of flakiness that must have been damn hard. But...why didn't he sell the other properties to get the money to fix this one?

"Several people who know and like Ackerman have encouraged him to sell his two other area properties and fix up 89 Gertie to make the authorities happy. But, Spence said, Ackerman has his own way of doing things."

Well, you probably don't want to go into too many details on that, do you?

heh. Having lived in a house that only had electricity and even that was down often because we lived in the country I do wonder where he dumped his honey wagon and where he got water to wash up.

Glad it's gone. Not sure why he wouldn't have saved the letters and put them on his other properties if he loved them so much.

Or he wanted to make a point. If the Alphabet house just moved to another location, it ceases to become a story and takes away his martyrdom.

no photos of the house before the demolition?

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the original issue.

I'll check my photo archive when I get home, I know I have a few shots of the house kicking around.

If I'm not mistaken, there are two other houses on that section of Gertie, both of which he owns.

I drive by there quite often and frankly, don't see why there was an issue. I doubt anyone around there cared...except the city.

From what I saw from the front...there are plenty of 'less cared for' houses all over the area.

But I reckon it was all about structural integrity.
