I got a kick outta the rank-and-file bitching about this civilian. What an obnoxious complaint. Crikey, who do these idiots think they are? These are police officers. No different than bus drivers or plumbers, do what you are told and quit whinging.

One notable one is his presence at a recent convention in Pakistan.

He was wearing a gun on his hip during the event.

He's not authorized to carry a gun though, as he's not a police officer.

He's also appearing in uniform at some events...again, not an officer, so not entitled to wear a uniform.

The gun thing is hilarious. he must have received approval from someone though. Not sure about the uniform though. What difference does it make if he wears one. How does one earn entitlement to wear a uniform?

Ask any cop and they can explain it.
The gun thing is earned as well, through training and experience.
He hasn't been trained on the proper use of a gun, so what business does he have carrying one.
What would make it hilarious is if he actually had to use it...he'd probably shoot himself in the foot.

The uniform must be earned based on training & experience.
It's impersonating an officer for one...it's a crime.
It's also insulting to officers who have EARNED their uniform and ranks.

"He's not authorized to carry a gun though, as he's not a police officer."

even private citizens can get permission to wear a gun, never mind the most senior official in our police force.

"He's also appearing in uniform at some events...again, not an officer, so not entitled to wear a uniform."

As commissioner he is indeed entitled to wear the uniform, regardless of what the union decides to tell people. He is a sworn peace officer.

Then we will redefine what an officer is - allowing him to wear whatever uniform he wants. Like Grumpy says - these are servicemen not unlike bus-drivers etc - I'm sick of their special status. I've seen the new crop they put out - literally anybody could join ranks nowadays. Besides - did Michaele Jean have former crown-wearing expeience before we jetted her around the world as "the head of Canada"/Harpers boss? These damn police and Fire unions had better start being more concerned about their performance than they are/do on union matters. I know several of each and even they can't stand the cliques and demands that remove them further from the public they serve. One day their hostage-taking squad will have to kick in the door of the union. Sounds like a conflict of interest though.

Huh? But I asked you since you raised the issue.

I know you are ex-army and your wife works with the police and are therefore more sensitive to such issues, but frank;y this notion of entitlement and impersonation and earned is more than a little offensive.

They are cops. That does not give them any special status in my book. I know that does not sit well with you but I can't help how I feel.

Now if we were talking about servicemen then I'm 100% behind you and agree with everything you've said.

I reckon we'll soon see a lot of retirements in the senior ranks.

Imo, those were the people that screwed everything up for the Horsemen; that dragged the force into disrepute. It'll be good to see them go.

The RCMP policing contract is about to expire in British Columbia, and that province is mulling over scrapping the RC's and establishing a provincial police force. Alberta is also considering this as well.
