If you think about it...an indoor pool is basically the same as an outdoor, but you build a warehouse over the top of it, plus maintenance costs are cut significantly because the pool is not subjected to the elements.

However, a big water park or two would be justified imo. That'll keep kids out of gangs eh?

Obviously you've never had an indoor pool.

The friggin' costs to maintain one are astronomical!!

The building they're in has to be it's own little world because of the high humidity levels.

I won't even go into the costs of heating the water and the room itself. Those costs alone will support a small African village for a century.

Compare this to a concave chunk of concrete with some unheated water in it and you'll find a big difference to the taxpayer.

But it certainly would be nice to have another kildonan park type pool in the city. Maybe even out charlsewood way.

I thought just old people lived in Charleswood?

A couple of water parks in the city would be good though eh?

That'll keep kids out of gangs....well, maybe a few.

I've been trying to find our price quotes so I could get the numbers right.

I've seen them, but I think they are archived now (meaning a real hassle to pull them).

Basically...and outdoor city pool is not just a concave pour of concrete.
It's a big rectangle sloped and formed, and any concave shaping is done AFTER the first pour to create a cavity for pumps, filters, etc.

The GRADE of the concrete is also significantly higher to withstand temperature extremes.
There is also a foundation poured to support the pool deck, and the ancillary buildings associated (locker room, showers, pool maintenance house, filters).

But all of those costs would be the same (or less) than an indoor pool.

Again, the only real additional costs for the indoor is the building envelope, and the mechanical electrical to provide heat.

Incidentally...an public indoor pool heating costs are minimal...and typically the pool area is not heated at all (or kept very low), as the heat from the pool is sufficient to keep the air at a reasonable temperature.

Understand that the costs are EXTREMELY different than someone who has an indoor pool in their home. And the building envelope is typically completely different, as someone with an indoor pool in their home still wants it to "feel" like a home, so the materials selected and accessories used are not the same as a more commercial environment.

There was a report that the city commissioned several years ago about public facilities and thats where I saw the comments/stats, etc about the cost of indoor pools. It is real.
