Governor General visits historic neighbourhood

Head of state - as in Harper's boss. He didn't care for the reference.

I contacted a protocol person and as i stated last night the GG is, technically-speaking, the head of state. She obviously does not operate in that capacity just as the Queen no longer operates as a powerful monarch over her people....I am waiting for the exact words this morning regarding "head of state".

Role of the Governor General
A Governor in all but name, Samuel de Champlain fulfilled 400 years ago several duties and responsibilities that would later be carried out by the Governors of New France and after Confederation, by the Governors General of Canada.

Canada became a country at Confederation in 1867. Our system of government is a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is Queen of Canada and Head of State. The Governor General is the representative of the Queen in Canada.

The responsibilities of the governor general have evolved over time, along with the evolution of Canada as a sovereign and independent nation. In 1947, letters patent signed by King George VI redefine the powers of the governor general. These letters patent “authorize and empower Our Governor General, with the advice of Our Privy Council for Canada or any members thereof or individually, as the case requires, to exercise all powers and authorities lawfully belonging to Us in respect of Canada”. Since then, the governor general has daily and fully exercised the duties of the Head of State, not only in Canada, but also abroad. As per the letters patent, the governor general is also the commander-in-chief of Canada.



The GG is the representative of the Queen, who is the Head of State. The GG is not the Head of State.

I still believe some folks read way more into her remarks than needed.

I think Mrs. Jean herself is guilty of reading more into the appointment than is. Granted - it must be tempting - coming from obscurity and being crowned Queen of a country. Do you think she's honest enough to fully appreciate that she was given the appointment because she is a she, is mixed-ethnic, speaks french etc. Do you think Clarkson recognized that also? They've been appointed as poster-citizen for Canada. The gig should fall under tourism and promotion and nowhere else - certainly not at the top of any political hierarchy, empowered or not. The kick-back she experienced from the above snafu is because people know the score and most want nothing to do with the useless monarchy expenses including the L.T's in the provinces. That money could fund real needs.

I think she was appointed GG because she use to own the CBC.

yeah, the heart of Point Douglas, the oldest neighbourhood in the city. My home is right by the river and the park and was built in 1883....gorgeous. Yes, an older neighbourhood that for years had issues but no longer are those issues as prevalent as in other areas.

Hahahaha.....stating the obvious regarding JTF is nothing compared to some of the names he has called me and is calling me now....seems to be lots of it here though, name calling that is, with the poor little conservative boys club (oh and one arse-kissing gal).

The foe feature is a form of censorship.....context is removed. I choose not to use it but would rather see the admin or one mod who is not biased exercise perhaps a bit more integrity when it comes to the so-called rules here. Seems to me that those of us who try to enhance this board come under more attacks than say those who believe that this board should exude or promote only one ideology. I see more feathers getting ruffled with a certain set and that set loves to attack and be petty.

Just pointing out what I see....for the most part this board can be quite fun as not everyone has a stick up their arse when it comes to differences in ideologies and lifestyles.
