I thought employees had already refused that idea last time it was brought up? I am sure of it..I wonder if I can find the news release?

and the second idea?
"
The first, PowerLine, would see one volunteer in each Winnipeg neighbourhood field calls about crime and vandalism and then co-ordinate with police and Manitoba Justice officials."

oh dear lord no. When I want to call the police I want to know the police will be getting the call AND maintaining my privacy AND actually responding. Especially if she states "The volunteer co-ordinators would not be subject to police background checks" I would totally not use them. Secondly. Wow, putting an unarmed, publicly accessible, well know person in the neighbourhood to report on the bad guys? Aint gonna take long for that person to be a victim.

oo.. she actually said 3 things.

More police officers.

sigh..it begins.

Well I'm as disappointed with her announcements, as well as WFP's coverage of the story. Either they omitted a lot of details or no one asked the right questions.

Maybe we can get the full story later as this is just a breaking story. Or more info from her website.

Ok, so lets ask a few questions;

What are the costs associated with the Sel Burrows Memorial Powerline Plan?

Is she aware that volunteerism is declining?

Will Powerline replace the Neighbourhood Watch?

How many "neighbourhoods" are there in order to determine how many volunteers are needed?

What if I want to volunteer in my neighbourhood but so does the guy across the street? Does Sel Burrows decide which one of us gets the job?

Does Sel Burrows get a paid city job out of this?

How much will it cost to train city employees to participate in this? Will CUPE be funding part of that? How much paid time during the work day will city employees be allowed to spy on me instead of doing the job they are paid for?

How stupid can she be to make announcements but dodge the question of cost?

I have noticed that the newsies never actually send a reporter any more. They send information recorders who dont know how to ask questions.

Well criticized or not, it sounds good on paper to people that read headlines and don't ask questions. That's what counts to the majority isn't it?

I wrote "How many activists does she have working for her? That's the new deal now? Help her get elected and they get a nice job from the city as a reward?"

But I don't think it'll get posted.

oh but they are "volunteers",,,for the first month until they realize as a volunteer the job is too large...

it seems like her programs buffer people from the city.
dont report your problems to councillors, report to the business advisory thing
and now dont call the police, call some volunteer. probably an uptight nazi like police officer wannabe gossipping neighbour.

The media do monitor sites like the sandbox and often develop stories and quote posts from the various threads.

During the election you will note in upswing in new posters and an increase in posts.

you can trust me when I tell you that the two big name Mayoral candidates have people EMPLOYED as part of their campaign to monitor social networking sites like this.

I am not sure about the other ones as I have not met them as yet, but one can be sure that they at least do a routine search for their name on the internet.

FYI.... Winnipeg Sandbox is almost always close to the top when it comes to search terms and local stuff we talk about.

Let me get this straight.

She wants to organize a neighbourhood watch type thingy eh....(don't we already do this and have one?)

...and have union people report crimes when they see them....(they should be doing this now.)

...and more cops.(wtf else is new?)

Incredible.

The more I ponder this "Powerline" bullshit, the more confused I get. Granted that the release was short on details, which is exactly what I would expect of her, but how the hell would this work.

Suspicious car sitting on the street, so I call WPS to report it and they tell me that I have to speak to the community volunteer? Why the hell would I want to speak to someone who would just be another layer in the process? Would I not be allowed to deal directly with the police? Once you look at this thing, you see how really stupid it is.

If this is the extent of her crime prevention strategies, I hate to see what happens when she gets to the issue of promoting the city to business.

How shallow can you get?

dont forget she is going to start a Business council.. when we already have individual ones for many areas of the city called Business Improvement Zones which would do far more good then a single large one encompassing the entire city.

Its like she since she has been gone to Ottawa for so long she does not even really realize what the city does or doesn;t have any more.

Sel Burrows sat on the Winnipeg Police Board. If you check their report from 2008 you will see some of these things mentioned there. Now who was that standing next to her again?

Judy will:
Make sure that there is a CFL team in Winnipeg!
Promote Diesel Transit!
Fight crime by setting up a department to "police" the streets!
Improve communication with so-called "police department" by ensuring phone service to report crimes!
Clear the streets of snow, using the power of 'spring'!

Holy mackeral- Judy wants city wprkers to report crimes that they see! Wow, great idea. So the workers will keep looking for crimes going on! Wont that cut down on productivity? That in itself is probably the crime! lol

I had to applaud Katz with his comment about Judy's silliness.

With respect to the union guys spotting crime, he said he did that 4 years ago with the bus drivers.

He then said it's too bad Judy has been out of the city loop for so long she doesn't know what's going on.

That's sooooo true.

Who the ffcuk is Sel Burrows anyway?
