RogerStrong- are you serious when you say school dances are not allowed? That is incredible if true. What was that movie years ago where the same rule was in and the students organized a graduation dance outside of the towns limits?

That's what my son - who was in high school there until June - told me.

But I'd bet if a reporter phoned, there's no such rule. Dances just never get approved.

It's the not being able to get things from Shoppers Drug Mart or other drug stores on a Sunday that really bothered me. That can go far beyond inconvience.

My understanding is that Walmart owns land in Steinbach up near the Superstore - but won't build until they're allowed to open on Sundays.

Both sides have a long way to go before I'm satisfied - and that speaks for virtually everybody that I know. The public realtions issue is theirs - not mine/ours.

"Regardless of number?" ANY number is too large for you?

This is Canada. We have freedom of speech, and democracy. We're not going to fight totalitarian anti-freedom laws like sharia law, by enacting our own totalitarian anti-freedom laws. You're free to propose ANY extremist law - but the more extremist it is, the less likely it is to happen.

I'm just moving back from Steinbach, where a liquor outlet was only allowed a year ago. Where the high school doesn't allow dances. Where you can't even get simple medical stuff when you badly need them, because even the drug stores can't or won't open on Sundays. All this is extremist Christians imposing their will on others.

Where's the protests and marches against this, by less extremist Christians? Even the proposed sharia law rules in Ontario would only apply to the small subset of Muslims who wanted it. It wasn't going to be forced on Christians, let alone other Muslims. And it was only considered because the Jewish community had their own government-endorsed legal tribunal system for those who wanted it.

If those numbers of protesters aren't enough for you, what do you propose? And does it apply to Christians too, with their laws applied to the rest of us?

In the case of Sharia law it does not benefit the women who would be persecuted under it.....sorry but I cannot endorse draconian laws being applied in our country. When one moves here it should be expected that it is our legal code that would be the final word and thank goodness for that.

A Jewish divorce, if one was religious, requires a "get" but in terms of civil codes it is the provincial family laws that matter and take precedence. Saying that religious legal codes are there for "those who want it" is not necessarily true as we have seen many examples of religious codes being applied in ways that can be quite harmful to certain parties.

I do not believe for a second that an abused woman of any religious background would be happy accepting a religious edict that would put her at the mercies of her abusers as we saw demonstrated aptly in Yemen when a ten year old girl successfully got out of an abusive arranged marriage.

As for christian laws, well, Steinbach is one town I will most likely never live in. I did however grow up just north of "Wankler" and remember the local yokel hypocrisy there regarding liquor and beer sales. It would be interesting to see secular challenges regarding some of those local issues but to compare Steinbach or Winkler to say some folks wanting Sharia laws? Hmmmm, wee bit of a stretch as Sharia has far more insidious undertones.

In Belize where I used to live there are several old order mennonite communities who for the most part live quite separate lives but when a young woman refused to obey her father and enter into an arranged marriage, and was of course subsequently beaten, she was able to have her father charged.

Religious "laws" are not laws but more yokes of oppression. Allowing any such nonsense in the name of multiculturalism is the beginning of a very dangerous path methinks.

Canada is such a great place eh....multi-culturalism has us paying for all the hyphens for people that really consider another country their home.

That's ffucked up imo.

We seem to be changing our values everytime somebody new moves here whereas they should be changing to our way of life. imo anyway.

....as you can probably tell, I'm dead set against this 'multi-cultural' rubbish.

It was designed as a slush fund to garner votes from immigrants and remains so.

I am all for multi-cultural. But without one dime of tax money for anything at all. Includes schools, festivals, legal-rights... Miss anything?
