On another thread, that I hijacked, I asked what it was about Winnipeg that makes one happy. So as to avoid the continued hijacking of that thread, and the chastising I was taking, I've started this thread.

There is but one rule for this thread. Only positive posts are allowed. If you wish to whinge about Winnipeg do it on any other thread, or start a new thread.

Begin.

Okay, I'll start.

People. I've lived elsewhere. And I've traveled an awful lot.

Winnipeggers are good peeps. Well, most of 'em anyhoo.

I find Winnipeggers warm and welcoming and friendly.

I'm very happy that I was born in Winnipeg.

It's a great place to come from, stay in and come to.....just the way it is btw....not too big. That's another thing that I love about Winnipeg. To me, it just about the right size.

(I'm not trying to bait anyone with the size thing btw)

I really can't think of anything at this moment. I came here because there was lots of work available, but am looking elsewhere now.

Winnipeg is a great place to live, work and raise a family! I love the small town feel of Winnipeg...There are so many great things about our city and if I was to list them all I would be here all night!

BTW, great thread GOM.

After almost 66 years here, as of Aug 7th, I can remember a few really neat things!
1) circa 1950's, going to my grandfather's farm via bicycle with my older brother, driving from Mountain and Powers and going down McGregor north, turning left at Kildonan Ave, and cutting through the fields (no houses) just over the tracks and then jumping on the hay bales, going into the cow barn and generally having a great time. That area is called The Garden City today!

2) The tracks that the electric cars ran on, were freezing cold in Winter, but ran right in front of our apartment.
Machray junior High School was an old building that we used to go back to after hours, open the metal fire escape and climb up the round metal fixture and then go sliding down.

4) The North End was just fantastic with so many different hard working ethnic people. Ukrainian, Polish , German, Jewish, aboriginal, and I have no recollection of any one hating anyone.

Jew is not an ethnic description.

Deank wrote:Jew is not an ethnic description.

Why not?
Definition: An ethnic group is a group of people whose members identify with each other, through a common heritage that is real or assumed. This shared heritage may be based upon putative common ancestry, history, culture, traditions, kinship, religion, language, shared territory, nationality or/and physical appearance. (from Wikipedia)

actually...it is...and it's not.

Jewish can be either ethnic or religious description.

There is a Jewish "Heritage" and State which defines the ethnic portion.

Then there are those who just join the religion (like Whoopi) because they respect the teachings and beliefs.

sorry but no, Jewish defines only a religion, not an ethnicity.

Not all Jewish people follow the same rules or even share a heritage. There is no language called Jewish either.

Whoopi converted because she respected the teachings and beliefs of judeism? Wow, who would have thunk it?

Yes it is...and I can present a dozen Jews who will support it.

Judasim is a religion, but there are Jewish people who do not follow the Jewish faith.

Prime example would be the "religion" Jews for Jesus who are Jewish people, but have a different faith.

Actually...bad example...and was supposed to be a joke.

Whoopi isn't Jewish (some of her family is)...a quote from Whoopi:
My family is Jewish, Buddhist, Baptist and Catholic. I don't believe in
man-made religions.

I really dont care if you can find a million Jews who support it. They are wrong.

What's the difference between a Jew and an Israeli?

Religion vs. Country perhaps?
