or increase taxes. but you decided to cut instead.
What would you cut and how much would that save you?
annual operating budget, not capital budget.

Every year cut 10% from the bureaucracy. Farm out all services to outside companies. Cut all advertising unless for legal or safety reasons. Cut all benefits for convicts. Prosecute to the full extent of the law ANYBODY cheating the system. Create two welfare agencies: one for those that must have it and another for those that don't (workfare). Create one CFS agency.

Pass legislation eliminating Unions from Emergency services and governmental services. That would save sh1t loads of coin.

Kick St. Boniface and St. Vital out of the city ;-) No more french stop signs!

I don't think that would cut $54 million from the budget.

Maybe you're right... cut out Charleswood also. There must be $54M worth of stop signs in that area alone!

I'm part of the reason the Maples has so many stop signs.

Back in the early to mid 80's there were very few 4 way stops. We all got licences and bought old 60's muscle cars and would race up and down Jefferson, leila, Pipeline, Mandalay. Then the city started to put up 4 way stops every few blocks to prevent us from drag racing.

Reason back lanes didn't get them is because we could not drag race in back lanes.

Wrong thinking! Stop cutting services, charge $15 per month per person living in Wpg (adult) and you have the money to operate!
54 million may not be so large! Show me the numbers for each item that is covered and it wll be pretty simple.

What is the total budget? 54 million is what per centage of the total?

Show us the numbers, I can do it, and I will cut 55 million and keep the difference!!

charge who rosen? Me? You?

$15/month = $180/year

$180/year for me =
Swimming lessons for my daughter, for the whole year
a class or two for me for my business
gas in my car (varying depending on the price)
3 months of phone/cable/internet

$180/year is too much to charge anyone...for some people it makes the difference between struggling, and dying.

Cuts have to come first...but not randomly...not just looking at some services and pulling the plug.

A balance has to be made...like...get rid of "middle management" in government. Why is it there? Can the "upper management" not handle their jobs? Are the people working under them not adults and they can't handle their jobs?

How about accountability for actions? The courts claim they are overworked...probably because they keep letting people go, and the criminals keep re-offending. Let's actually punish those who steal from us, who commit real crimes. Let's make an example of them, so the next guy will think twice about committing a crime. Doing that will reduce the number of court-workers required, and lawyers, and judges...and they can move on to more important cases.

54 Million is really not a lot of money when it comes to government. Heck...just look at the cost of building one stadium, or one museum...54 million won't even cover the costs.

But 54 Million when it comes to useless redundant offices, and positions. And I'd even offer that if that money can be redirected to a more useful purpose...and those redundant positions are funneled to that new purpose...it would qualify in cutting a budget, because it fulfills a need that before could not be afforded due to overspending.

Better yet take 1 percent of the gas tax presently and put it to the infurstructure . Like the useless people who are in charge told us it was for when the tax started . Then like GOM said revamp the welfare system completly.

This thread is probably a good example of why politicians don't get things right.

Most of them don't actually make any decisions. They usually ask the "experts" what should be done, and move forward with the one that sounds "most reasonable", or that the general consensus agrees on.

From this thread you can see that few people have the same suggestions...and most of those on this forum have similar viewpoints on other matters.

Heck, you can save 154 million by just cutting the experts' paychecks.

We need to build 2 posible 3 jails and gee the province has been looking for awhile and no one is jumping to have one next to them . Then of course we would have to admend the CC of Canada that is not cheap . So believe it or not this could be expensive . Even at that I agree totaly with what you say .

GOM, before you recommend farming out everything to the private sector I recommend you ask some people in the know how much money has been "saved" by farming out snow clearing operations. It was cheaper for the duration of the first contracts, then steadily has increased in cost and the private contractors are raking it in. I have first hand knowledge from a previous employer.

One of the dumbest moves the city ever did. You replaced dozens of well paid (high tax bracket) workers, with private contractors reaping all the benefits and profits while they pay their operators relative peanuts.

If there's no real cost savings to be seen long term, I'd prefer my tax dollars go to keeping middle class jobs in the city rather than create more poverty level jobs so some business owner can pocket the difference.

But I'm a commie bastard.
