I don't get it at all! Olympics and women not being allowed to ski jump! Makes cents to me! They are smaller and definitely not as strong so why are they taking on the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Winter Games.
They have to argue to the old men, so what is the point?
"arguing they have a constitutional right under our Charter of Rights and Freedoms to compete next February. Ski jumping is the only Olympic sport that bars women from participating.

The biggest event these women have had to endure is the blame game: VANOC says it's the International Olympic Committee that's discriminating, the IOC says it's the Fédération Internationale de Ski, the FSI says it's the IOC - round and round they go in an old boys' relay race. At the end of the day, women are still shut out.

My first exposure to this sporting version of equality occurred when I was a bike racer in the 1970s and learned that women cyclists were not allowed to compete at the Olympics. No reason was given - and if we questioned why this was so, we'd be blacklisted. When we were finally allowed to compete in 1984, those who had fought for this right remained on the list, unwelcome on national teams.

At the 2008 Beijing Summer Games, countries were allowed to send as many as 11 men but only three women for the cycling track events - which may have been because there are seven events for men and, despite the 24 years since we gained entry, only three track events for women. Cycling is not alone. While female kayakers were allowed into the Olympics in 1948, there are only three events for them and nine for men. There are still no canoeing events for women at the Games.

While covering the Olympics last summer, I asked IOC member and former Union Cycliste Internationale president Hein Verbruggen why there were so few events for women cyclists. "I don't know," he said. "I guess it's historical."

In 1990, I tried discussing such inequities with IOC members at the International Olympic Academy in Olympia, Greece. For the first time, the academy - founded by the IOC in 1961 - was devoting its session to women at the Olympics. I was one of five women representing Canada and, one day at lunch, one IOC member told me that, in his country, they beat women who spoke out of line. After lunch, another reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys. "I am in cabin 22," he said, jingling the keys in my face. Toronto was bidding for the 1996 Games; he must have thought I'd been sent to convince him.

From world championship events in 1966 to just before the Sydney Games in 2000, women athletes had to wear a "femininity card" awarded only after they'd passed a test administered by the IOC. The first tests forced women to walk naked in front of a panel of doctors. Should these "experts" want further proof, they were allowed to do gynecological examinations. At the 1968 Olympics, the tests changed to buccal saliva swaths to determine the presence of only X chromosomes. They had a 20 per cent false positive rate; women athletes were told to feign an injury and go home.

Somehow, the combination of strength and femaleness has not yet computed for the IOC. There must be a biological flaw in women athletes, a tiny penis lurking somewhere. Sandi Kirby, chair of the University of Winnipeg's sociology department and a former Olympic rower, Berit Skirstad, of the Norwegian University of Sport and Physical Education, and others have lobbied for years to get these tests banned.

The fight for equality in sport is never-ending. Next year, while our women's hockey team tries to regain Olympic gold, other women are still fighting for their right to play.

Three years ago, in Vulcan, Alta., Chelsey Rhodes filed a complaint with the Alberta Human Rights Commission on behalf of her cousin, Cori Pasolli, when she was prevented from playing on the bantam boys' team she'd made. This nearly 20 years after the Supreme Court of Canada upheld Justine Blainey's right to play when the Ontario Hockey Association barred her from the all-boys team she made. The Vulcan Minor Hockey Association recently agreed that Ms. Pasolli could play - a little late considering that she now attends the University of Lethbridge.

Hockey Alberta is appealing. Someone there must be vying for a seat on the IOC.

Woman could be dangerous, Vancouver police warn

WENDY STUECK

April 17, 2009

Vancouver -- Vancouver police are warning the public that a woman wanted for uttering threats, criminal harassment and breach of an undertaking could be dangerous. Denise Pekovich, 43, has a history of mental illness, may have access to firearms and could be a danger to herself or others.

I have yet to hear a response to the IOC 's reasons that have been presented for not allowing women's ski jumping aside from 'it's not fair to discriminate against us because we are women'. This make me think that the IOC's reasons are vaild. Is it the position of these women that for every men's event the same female event should be held as well? For some events this doesn't seem very reasonable. What about those evnts where there are female events, but not mens events. Should mens events be added?

The testing that is done is because at some point during th 70's there were eastern bloc 'female' athletes competing in events who were actually males.

Yes most women do get upset when you open a men's only bar but never say a word when it is women's only gym . Just my observation .

This thread isn't a joke...there ARE some things women are not equal at...no matter how much they wine.

Ski Jumping, as it's been explained to me, is a torturous event on the knees of all athletes. Women's knees (by nature) are more susceptible to injury from jumping/jarring...especially from high falls and torque than men's are.

A story was just broadcast last night on the news, that it's been proven that when a woman is ovulating...her kneecaps actually spread open (get your mind out of the gutter guys) inside the cap...from an increase of fluid...and increases the likelihood of injury.

So...what's the Olympics supposed to do? Schedule all the events for ski-jumping around the menstrual cycle of the athletes? Shoot all the athletes with Testosterone to reduce the risk of injury? Heck...apparently Alberta pays for sex-change operations...just get them all "fixed"...oh wait...no...then they're just men.

I believe in most equality...where it's reasonable to do so. But there ARE distinct differences between men & women...physically, emotionally, mentally...and no amount of complaining or arguing is going to change that.

If women want to jump, let the bastards jump! Don't let dumb ass old commie bastard men tell them it isn't safe because when you ovulate................
Too many old bastards making rules for the women, except Taliban, who have equality in mind when they blow up school's with young girls in the building!

I think the Israelis are also equal opportunity believers when it comes to killing civillians (many of whom deserve their fate.)

Triniman- sorry i don't understand the link between women trying to do what men do and Israelies killing civilians. Is killing civilians a new event planned for the Winter Olympics? I think that could be a great spectator sport, similar to a few years ago when they put MEN in arenas trying to kill other men, and also with lions and tigers!
I don't remember if any women were complaining about not being allowed to play! They were prombably complaining about their men not coming home for supper!

The real issue probably comes down to money/insurance.

Some woman wants to jump...off she goes...but oh no...it's ovulation time...and BLAM!!! she lands and blows her knee out.

So now what? Now she blames the IOC or the Ski Jump association and demands she be compensated for her loss...when her own body put her at higher risk than other jumpers.

Or...just as bad...they do a blood test before the jump...and it comes up she's ovulating, so they cancel her jumps to reduce the risk of injury...then what? new drugs to turn her into a man for a day? she sues everyone for discrimination?

Personally...if there's ENOUGH interest in expanding the sport to include women...then by all means...

Heck...it wasn't that long ago Beach Volleyball was not an Olympic sport...but Indoor Volleyball has been for quite some time.

Have any of you played both? I have...and personally I find Beach Volleyball (real...competitive BV) to be HARDER and more demanding than Indoor. And I have played Semi-Pro Beach, and AA Indoor. Level-for-level...Beach is harder...yet people protested it becoming an Olympic Sport...and now it's one of the most watched sports.

Hmmmmm.... So you're saying if the women ski jumpers wore what the beach volleyball players wore, then they would attract the necessary interest? Wink
