Retail expansions that have been in the news recently

The Elms..
The Old Winnipeg Arena
The IKEA development
north Main

Can Winnipeg actually support all of the different retail expansions? Or do all of these NEW retail developments simply mean other stores and areas elsewhere in the city closing down?

Probably a number of factors will come into play. Places like Ikea will draw thousands of out of town visitors to that area. While there I suspect they will find other things to spend their money on. As well, Winnipeg was at one time (probably still is) Ikea's largest catalog market customer. Those sales will likely now go to the store itself.

Winnipeg is growing and there are more customers to go around. I think Winnipeg is gradually shedding it's reputation for cheap-spenders. We are buying more and higher priced goods.

And yes, there likely will be a thinning of the retail herd.

The Elms will not move forward, as Winnipeg has a very small market for those that will spend good money for good products. The high end dress stores are probably succeeding on Academy and Corydon?? The high end furniture stores wouldn't go into expensive space, as a matter of policy!
What is left? Hair cuts, massages, candy??
But 650,000 square feet is an incredible huge space.
I had 16,000 square feet on Market avenue, and that is 125' or 38 metres x 38 metres, and multiply that by 40 stories.
I think 5000 sq feet is a pretty large dress store so where are we going to find 130 stores??

And then there's THIS to consider.

Shopping Technology.

I keep hearing rumours about that store. I don't see the appeal but I understand it would do very well in Winnipeg.

AND...let's not forget about other advancements in technology that can be applied to shopping:
