"Kansas City school board narrowly approved the plan to close 29 out of 61 schools Wednesday night at a meeting packed with angry parents. "

"Covington has blamed previous administrations for failing to close schools as the enrollment -- and the money that comes with it -- shrank. Past school closure plans were either scaled back or scrapped entirely.
Administrators warned that without the cuts, the district would have been in the red by 2011."

No parallel at all to Manitoba eh?

Oh right in Manitoba the school boards just raise taxes or get more money from the province instead of trying to live within their means.

I don't disagree about the school boards being a problem...but the reason Kansas City is dying, is because they had a mass exodus from the city, and more and more people are moving to the "suburbs" where new school districts have been built.

Not exactly a Winnipeg parallel, as the number of schools and students within the city has actually increased.

I think there is a corollary. We have this false "keep schools" open mandate from the province. I say shut them down when attendance reaches "x" after "y" years. Turn them into old folk centres or daycare centres. Whatever. Put them to good use rather than forcing them to stay open...

But Winnipeg is changing schools and programs.

Build what? 3 schools (that I know of) since I arrived (in 7 years), to accommodate additional students.

The School Divisions are a joke though...and that's the biggest problem Winnipeg faces for schools.
Winnipeg should have 1 school division...and then have a few councils for various areas

And Dean, I'm not reading any school reports...just what I see in the news.

yeah.. schools in outlying areas... because "everyone" is moving away from the existing areas into new areas.

I like the idea of old folks homes, but only if you are 65 years old!
