I don't know Gertrude...so maybe you can answer some questions about it?

Are there stop signs?
Traffic lights?
Crosswalks?
Many side-streets crossing it?

If ANY of the answers are "yes"...then YES, they NEED to use a siren (dependent on the speed they are traveling)

Sirens are not used for the traffic and people they can see or anticipate...it's to warn those dumbasses (your word) who aren't paying attention, are driving home tired or drunk, are wandering the streets at night.

An emergency vehicle is also not allowed to run a red light (if there are traffic lights there) without having its lights flashing and blasting the siren at least once.

Why you ask?

For the same reason the city claims it needs camera lights, and everyone is forced to wear a seatbelt...in the name of "safety"...because somebody, somewhere was an idiot and pulled out in front of an ambulance who didn't have lights on, or maybe did but didn't have their siren blaring.
