The TOP earning doctors in WRHA earn that much, but the average do not.
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/er-doctors-top-earners-wrha-report-shows-97460379.html

That's mainly ER doctors (which is a high need in Manitoba right now and so commands a higher salary), doesn't even seem to feature other specialties such as neurosurgery that are highly paying, and definitely doesn't include the average family MD.

Here is info on the pay of an average family MD in Canada ($93,000- 144,000 average):
http://www.payscale.com/research/CA/Job=Family_Physician_%2F_Doctor/Salary

and broken down by province we are pretty much middle of the pack:
http://www.payscale.com/research/CA/Job=Family_Physician_%2f_Doctor/Salary/by_State

By major cities in Canada, Edmonton pays way more than Winnipeg does.

This is a Canadian article with an interesting chart regarding the salaries of physician specialties and includes their overhead costs (which many people don't consider when moaning about how much those doctors make).... http://www.milliondollarjourney.com/doctor-salaries-not-as-high-as-you-think.htm

I have to agree. I doubt they even have a list. My daughter's eye is infected again....I keep waiting for that call...

Yes, in line with what I stated for Canadian average. Manitoba gross incomes are listed at the end of this document, feel free to look up how much your doc made last year:
http://www.gov.mb.ca/health/ann/docs/0809.pdf
Note that there are some with relatively "low" incomes, such as B. Postl making "only" $87,1075. This is actually for a few clinical hours he has to put in just to keep his license in addition to the $408,438 he took home as an administrator for WRHA.

UPDATE!

Its now been 13 months since my son was first given permission to see the specialist. My wife tried calling two weeks ago

message says.. we are on vacation and the office is closed to Sept. 27.

I call my wife today and remind her to call. She calls and the message says. I am away from my desk right now, please leave a message. As GC is well aware leaving a message with this specialist is useless they never call back. So my wife waits 30 minutes.. calls back.. we are on vacation until Oct. 4.

F this sh1t, I call our health ministers office and complain. They will be looking into it ASAP. I can understand waiting, sure.. sorta... but not really since its my sons eyesight that we are talking about here, but the complete and utter lack of communication from them is ridiculous. I told the person answering the phone that I would drive myself to regina at my expense if need be, but this is absolute crap.

So why doesn't the health system set up a wholesale purchase of labour with USA Doctors, so that Manitoba's can get looked after?
I wonder if clinics with excess capacity would accept the Manitoba pay schedule, and Manitobans could get looked after?
Has any one tried suing the system for delay?
Any lawyers out there?
that is what i want to try, but not until after my Nov 2nd operation.

I had to wait a month to see a plastics guy here in Winnipeg. Mind you, I was referred by another specialist in BC, and the work has already been done - he just needs to make sure it turned out the way it was supposed to, which takes all of 10 minutes.

I have some updates regarding my daughters ridiculously long wait. I have spoken with a rep from the PC party of MB and they are all over this. I still haven't heard a word from our current health minister (big surprise). The eye doc has also called my daughters pediatrician this week...I am hoping she will get in to see him sooner rather then later!

rosencrentz wrote:So why doesn't the health system set up a wholesale purchase of labour with USA Doctors, so that Manitoba's can get looked after?
That's not necessarily easy for specialists. Particularly, if they specialize in a rare condition there may not be enough people in the province to have someone here full-time. For example, there are about 350 people with MS in Manitoba. If a specialist was able to see about 15 patients per day, or 105 per week, all MS patients would be able to see the specialist about once per month. Do they have to go to the specialist this often or even more often? So is this enough demand for even one MS specialist, or do we need more than one? I would guess that for many specialities they are able to estimate the demand and try to fill it as good as possible. Sometimes it maybe better to fly someone in from Toronto or other city a few times a year and have the wait times in between.

Many such specialists also do research. Perhaps there could be a resident MS specialist in Winnipeg if there was additional research available to her/him.

Mind you there are probably no MS studies of any value anyway... /sarcasm

To be able to do research they have to write proposals and compete for funds. I think there is at least one specialist for MS in Manitoba, and her publications pretty much reflect what we know about MS in the Province.

My point was maybe such a specialist could do both: consult with patients and conduct research.

Sure thing, but they make their money with billable hours, and am not sure if research as non-patient service can be charged to the Province.

...and just where would you get this 'super person' that is able to do both research and carry a patient load?
