Not only are more Manitobans waiting for MRI scans, they are waiting longer.

The situation isn't great if you are waiting for a hip replacement, either. Manitoba is the only province where the waiting times went up in the last year.

But good news comes for those who have a short wait: While there are thousands of Manitobans waiting for a CT scan they're getting them done more quickly.

The figures are contained in a report -- made public as a result of a Free Press freedom of information request -- and in a report from the Canadian Institute for Health Information.
Despite injections of millions of dollars by the provincial and federal governments, Manitoba continues to have long waiting lists and times for some key procedures that have been targeted for reductions for years.

Health Minister Theresa Oswald acknowledges wait times for MRI scans are one problem area that needs addressing. Manitoba is the only province where wait times for the procedure have gone up. The provincial average wait time for the procedure is 18 weeks, with 24 weeks in Winnipeg and 13 weeks at Boundary Trails Health Centre near Morden and Winkler.

"We're not satisfied and we believe we can do better," Oswald said, adding the province is in the process of injecting $500,000 to trim the waiting list down by six weeks by the end of 2011.
Oswald said the waiting list is not for emergency patients. "They don't go on a wait list, they happen immediately."

But Oswald said the waiting list is still better than in the past.

"Eighteen weeks is not the best spot we've been, but it's a really good distance from 32 weeks like we were at when our Opposition was in control of it," she said.

Anyone else getting real tire of this "but we are doing better than our predecessors" rhetoric trotted out by the NDP?

Can we put oswald's lame mantra into proper context? How much money have the Fed's injected into Manitoba since the Tories were last in power twelve years ago? Was MRI relatively new in 1999? Couldn't (Should) every government that has had twelve years to "fix a problem" have fixed it already? Especially since it has been an election platform promise.

Why don't our media types ask these questions of the oswald-like twits that run this bankrupt government?

When will Manitobans open their eyes and vote the jackasses out of office?

It will be interesting to see if they try running as champions of health care again. I don't think we'll hear anything about hallway medicine.

Their motto will be "But we've only had 10 years...give us a chance."

It feels like someone is campaigning already.
I am getting a little sick of the ad I see on TV about the guy who had the stroke and so many health professionals helped him.
I wonder who is paying for that ad.

Very good question. There are another series of Manitoba government ads running that pat's themselves on the back for how good a job they are doing.

Many things bother me about this. If NOT an election year why is the bureaucracy even running these ads? Why are they spending money telling us they built a bridge or fixed a road or sewer?

But IN an election year such ads should be forbidden. Unless the party in power is paying for them out of their campaign budget this is simply cheating the taxpayer and creating an uneven playing field.

So, if the waiting time in Winnipeg is 24 weeks in Winnipeg, but only 13 weeks at a facility about an hour and a half away, doesn't there seem to be a issue with the distribution of resources? I mean, I'd go to Winkler for the day if it cut my wait time by 11 weeks. (almost 3 months)

That's just it. It is politically expedient to equip small town/region medical facilities with the equipment necessary such that those people don't have to commute into Winnipeg for every medical test. Totally understandable.

But when does it become politically expedient to ensure that 750,000 people are accommodated in Winnipeg in lieu of 50,000 in the Winkler area?

This is a political hot potatoe but these ndp icewholes are playing with Winnipeggers lives!

You always have the choice of where you go to have your MRI performed if you are able to travel. If you ask your DR's assistant to look at more than the facilities in Winnipeg for open appointments, then you can cut your wait time in half. It is the folks who either don't know they are able to do this or the ones who are unable to travel that have the longer wait times. There are other things that complicate things and make the wait times seem unfair. For example my daughter just had an untrasound on her heart Feb 1st and the cardiologist wanted her to have an MRI done, DR's assistant made the appointment and voila, her appointment is either this Friday or next Friday. When I talked to the physician's assistant at the MRI clinic, I asked how come we got an appointment so quick when there are people who have to wait for months. I was told that because it is her heart, it is deemed urgent where someone who is scheduled for an MRI on their leg may not be deemed urgent as it may not be life threatening, so their wait time would be different. This just shows how the system is playing "God" with people's lives.

While I understand the need to make more urgent health matters a higher priority the simple fact is even a hip MRI should not be an 18 week wait. This is what baffles me. These devices are fully capable of 24/7 operation. Hire more staff and get at it!

Or, privatize it. I can assure you the private sector will find a way to do this right and for the same money or less...

my comments on the matter

"the real simple solution to lowering wait times to them all at least
being the same would be to allow some patient input into the process.
Far too often doctors offices just take the easy way out and call
whichever place they want and ignore the fact that the patient could get
seen days, weeks,MONTHS faster if they only went to XXXX.

The
next step would be to extend the working hours of the diagnostic
departments to be almost 24 hours. Hands up everyone that would be
willing to take a 1AM appointment if you knew it meant cutting your wait
time in half?

How does it make any sense that we have these
BILLIONS of dollars of equipment sitting idle 1/2 of every day? Why are
hospitals "closed" during the evening? More workers? Fine ..get those."

heh.. first time ever with no thumbs down from anyone on the freep site. I wonder if Rosie missed my comment or is to sick???
