The Trailer for James Cameron's Avatar is finally out! This movie is supposedly going to be groundbreaking and will be shown in 3D. The movie has been in development for a few years now. New technology had to be developed specifically for this film.

i haven't figured out the details for this one though.

my understanding of the new "technology" when the movie was first announced...was that it was 3D without the glasses.

That new projectors would have to be installed throughout movie theaters...because to make it work...there would actually have to be a projector that puts things "off" the screen and over the audience.

I couldn't find any detail about it though...it's all been very secretive.

My imagination has them projecting into thin air...sort of like a hologram...which becomes part of the story somehow...like a baseball being thrown towards the audience...and a hologram picks up the image and carries it over them to the back wall.

Wow. I was hoping for a lot more. That trailer didn't excite me at all.

It looked like the Star Wars prequels with even LESS personality, if that's even possible.

As for the 3D technology, I think you still need the polarized glasses.

That's some trailer. Visually stunning.
"AVATAR takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery, as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. The film was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual production work, AVATAR delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film, disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story."
Looks like it will be a huge film.

add to that... they are bringing 3D technology to home TV

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/Panasonic-ties-up-with-Cameron_s-_Avatar_-movie-to-go-3-D_-promote-home-TVs.html

which I still dont understand because it says you still need glasses....but I already have 3D at home if the DVD plays it and I wear the glasses.

wait a minute... from the link I provided.

"
Several animation films are already being shown in theatres in 3-D, but "Avatar," set for release Dec. 18, will be the first major non-animation film debuting worldwide in both 2-D and 3-D."

umm... just what the heck is not animation about that movie?? scratch

I think they are trying to make a distinction between cartoonish and realistic styles, not the method of photography.

BTW, shouldn't this be called 4D? I'm assuming the images change with respect to time.

but Journey to the Center of the Earth was just released last year...non-animated...and in 3D

Granted, they used those funky red/green glasses...but even the DVD release has a 3D/2D choice and comes with glasses.

I wasn't impressed with the trailer though. Add 3D (which is coming) to a decent Xbox or PS3 gaming system...and the graphics are better and interactive too.

Now...if you want REAL 3D, WITHOUT the glasses...try looking at one of these:

http://www.seereal.com/en/autostereoscopy/index.php

And this is what I thought Cameron was introducing.

(PS..if you're interested in buying a computer monitor like this...let me know...I know a guy Wink).

Is Avatar not easily the Oscar winner?
Did anybody else note that it was the Aboriginal equivalent of the District 9 black South African sub-plot?
Both very interesting movies from that perspective.

Incidentally - if you plan to see it - go to the 3D version (stunning really)

I thought that it was only in 3D.

My sister saw it in regular format a few weeks ago and then went again in 3D. I think they were both showing for some reason initially but the other night at Silver City St Vital it was only in 3D. In any case - a must see (in 3D).

I've not yet seen it but the concensis is as stated here...

I look forward to seeing the movie. But... I have not been to a movie theater in maybe 20~ years. I don't imagine going to see this movie in a theater so I'll have to watch it in plain old 2d.

I might go see it at the cheap seats. I know I cannot see a 3d version of anything, because of my eyesight.

If I may be so bold as to ask, what is it about your eyesight that prevents you from watching a 3D movie?

Grumpy you have to break your movie-theatre ban for this one. Watching it at home won't do it justice. I will reimburse you the $13.50 to see it (3D sur-charge of $3). I'll even throw in the added cost for the bushel and gallon deal at the modest price of $15. How do they get away with those prices anyway?
