It's their own fault. When you visit a country where the laws and culture are different, you can't break them just because you come from a country where it is legal.

"Sexual relationships outside of marriage are illegal in Dubai and can attract imprisonment," a list of dos and don'ts in the United Arab Emirates says.

How hard is that to understand? I'm sure Dubai would not have charged both couples in the first place if they had not behaved so lewdly in public. When non-marital sex is illegal, and you do it in full view of the public on a beach, what do you think will happen?

For the record, I think what consenting adults do in private is their business, but if you travel to a country that has different views of that, you may as wll behave. And who says this is unique to Dubai? Texas just passed a law 2 years ago making sodomy legal. Gays risked persecution for violating these laws. I'm sure it's still illegal in some states.

I would love to visit a Muslim country. It would be great to learn about a different culture. I can't overly sympathize with two couples who were drunk and lewd in public, especially in a country where drinking alcohol goes against the teaching of the main religion in the area.

That is ridiculous. They shouldn't promote tourism and expect those from the western world to abide by their crazy laws. I wouldn't step foot into a muslim country.

A friend of mine lived in Dubai, he was in a band there. They serve alcohol in all of the resorts. If alcohol is illegal and against the muslim faith then why serve it anywhere?

These unique cases are overblown by the Western media, and we all know what ethnic group has the most influence on that. I would not judge the whole Muslim World by one case. They have similiar zany cases in the USA.

because alcohol restrictions do not apply to the faithless since they are going to hell anyway.

but hey.. if I were travelling in that area I would check something like this little site before leaving my own country

http://www.voyage.gc.ca/countries_pays/report_rapport-eng.asp?id=306000

Other Illegal and/or Restricted Activities

Religious proselytizing is not permitted.

Common-law relationships, homosexual relations, adultery, and prostitution are illegal and are subject to severe punishment, including the death penalty.

In public, physical contact (e. g. holding hands) should be avoided.

Pork is illegal in the emirate of Sharjah.

Possession of pornographic material is illegal in all Emirates.

It is forbidden to photograph certain government buildings and military installations. People should not be photographed without their permission.

========================

I ask you this GC. We in Canada promote tourism to all countries of the world. We want everyone to come here.
Yet we have "crazy" laws like women and gays have equal rights and that you cant carry an AK47 around in downtown Toronto.

So should we stop promoting ourselves? Or simply make our laws known to people?

I would love to live in a world where all the laws were the same as the ones I wanted enforced and that no country was different. where people were free to live and work anywhere on the planet without restrictions.

But who is to say my ideas about laws are the right ones?

My point is why promote yourself as a touristy resort kinda place that serves booze when booze is clearly frowned upon? Why hire bands with scantily clad females singing in them if sex outside of marriage is a punishable offense? Seems kinda hypocritical to me. I've had a few friends travel overseas to play at the resorts....in Dubai and Bahrain. In all of the bands they've played in one of the musts is a female singer, blondes are preferred. They also dress provocatively. LMAO...serve alcohol and have scantily clad women in the bars...yet sex outside of marriage is illegal? Mmmm hmmm

But when you look at who is behind all of the ownership/numbered companies of most of the resorts in places like Dubai, UAE, they are American or European based companies. So yes the laws of the country applies to the streets, towns and villages but not to the resorts as they are within a confined area or compound. I have relatives who live on an major oil company compound in Saudi Arabia and they are free to abide by the Canadian/America laws that are part of the company owned laws within the compound but when they leave the compound, they must abide by the Saudi laws. The one that sticks out most in my mind is the women must cover their faces and legs to the ankles when outside the compund but within it, they are free to walk around in shorts and tank tops.
Personally I would love to visit a middle eastern country to see the history, the architecture and the touristy sites but I am not sure if it would be a country that is in such conflict with the US like Iran or Iraq.

Huh? Yes you can. If you're from Canada then you would know that as the norm - demands from, and apologies of our governments. Most of which receive concession. So, you're preaching to the wrong country with that logic. It blows my mind that anybody would want to travel/vacation there in the first place. to these lands.

its the married men who should be in jail... for being crazy enough to get married.

Once again, these cases are fairly rare, and the media usually overblows them. There have been similiar bizarre cases in the USA, but because it's a Muslim country, people tend to jump to conclusions rather quickly. The irony is that if this thread were titled "Another reason never to visit a JEWISH country" (Israel), people would jump all over the creator of the thread as being a anti-semite.

It wouldn't happen in Israel, because they have enough common sense in preventing radical religious nut cases, and there are enough around, in all religions.
There will be the odd one that gets through to cause political damage.
Look in a previous thread on travel and the warning about a tropical vacation to stay away from a certain country because of 2 different Canadian deaths!
Kill off some vacationers and you'll pay dearly for that!
I remember many years ago the Mexican president made some anti-semitic remarks and the jewish population stopped going there. It cost them plenty. Why would you spend your vacation money somewhere that you werent welcome?
Arresting a westerner on vacation! Good move!

You really DON'T get it do you? You don't see how completely asinine that comment is do you?

Try to THINK this through. Try hard.

Speaking of the odd one that got through, the last time an Israeli Prime Minister was assassinated, it was by one of the Jewish religious nut cases, Yigal Amir. Yitzhak Rabin was a two-time Prime Minister and a peace-maker but died in 1995.

yeah... wont arrest them at all... they will just be assualted by hundreds of men for taking a picture, or other women being assaulted for not walking on the other side of the street.... yep nothing at all goes wrong in Israel

Actually, it's more likely that Israel does not resort to terrorism because it was instrumental in the creation of the state of Israel. The Irgun, Stern Gang, and (to a lesser extent), the Hagganah all resorted to terrorism to get the British to leave the area.
The bombing of the King David hotel and the kidnap and murder of two British soldiers convinced the public in Britian to rally their respective MP's to leave the area, since unemployment was at an all time high, and the British were still rebuilding the damage to their country after the fall of the Nazis.
The irony is the Palestinans are doing the exact same thing 60 years later, the only difference being they have not acheived their political objective.

If there was no "war" going on right now in any of them I would pick IRAQ simply because it is the cradle of civilization.
