Winnipeg Sun Manitoba will be better sheltered from the effects of the global economic downturn than nearly every other province in Canada, says a report released yesterday.

The Ottawa-based Conference Board of Canada -- one of the country's largest think tanks -- released its latest economic projections yesterday, predicting Manitoba will have the second-highest economic growth in Canada in 2008, and the third highest next year.

The report projects a 2.7% increase in our gross domestic product this year, second to Saskatchewan, and a 2.4% increase in 2009. Both are well above the national average.
So while we might have missed the recent highs it appears we'll likely miss some of the lows. Slow and steady the good ship Manitoba.

Now imagine where Manitoba might be today under a different provincial government.

I think this "good news" is a little misleading. While we may not feel the downturn as much as others, we certainly didn't enjoy the prosperity that others did as well. Its a matter of what the net effect is.

yeah.... and now a major American think tank is predicting Food riots in America by 2012. You dont think that maybe they would try to cross the border for food if it got that bad?

A week's supply??? You're a better man than me Dean....the three females in my household assure me that chocolate goes bad quite quickly and must be eaten when it's fresh.

The talk about food riots is insane. I would be far more concerned about beer riots. Besides, if food were to be in short supply, I'd just cheat on my income tax, and get sent to jail.

yeah a smart thinking man would stock up on cigarettes and alcohol. Because no matter how hungry or desperate a person becomes they can always find money for alcohol and smokes. And.. alcohol and smokes are easier to store.
