With CanWest stock being worth a mere 85 Million and it once being worth billions. Can the asper Clan actually pull off a new football stadium at the U of M without a massive amount more of Taxpayer money?
CaWest cuts 560 jobs in financial streamlining.

the latest "agreement" had a no move stipulation in the contract.

Was that for the team, or the stadium?

Why would anyone want to spend any taxpayer money for a stadium without a cover or a big beret on it??

Seems to me, a big expense for very few days of usage, unless they open it up for soccer mom's and high school football!

Which is why a stadium idea in Headingley or outside the city limits would make more sense...they could build a fully enclosed stadium without interfering with the MTS Centre's crappy no competition clause.

The worst kept secret is that a fully enclosed stadium, or one with a retractable roof would serve more events than an open top stadium.

Just look at Monster Trucks for example; they need lots of room, obviously. Yet whenever they come to town (usually in the winter, or when snow is on the ground) they go to the MTS centre, because the stadium is much too cold, and full of snow. No one would go in the winter. Not only that, but the trucks barely have enough room to move in the stadium, they get one jump and 1/4 throttle, and they have to stop, turn around and jump again, making sure not to go hurteling into the stands.

And the trucks can't come here in the summer, because they are usually down south in thoes exceedingly huge stadiums in the sun belt (and deep south)...so winter is the only option....

[end rant]

Its not city limits. Note even when announcing the new arena 4plex being built in headingly they specifically said. THIS WOULD NOT COMPETE WITH THE MTS CENTRE.

Isn;t it 250KMs??? or 50KMs .. Cant remember... but something that would definately take it far enough out of Winnipeg to not really be much of an attraction to many people.

Ya...something like 50 or 100 Kms I understood.

What would that cost us? $250 million to buy them out of the contract?

Who'd dumb idea was it to allow this in the first place?

And no, I have no idea how much it would cost to get out of the deal. That's what a negotiation is for. Perhaps much less than that...who knows?

Maybe some retail property in St. James perhaps! Rolling Eyes

The peeps who figured the MTS Centre would not be built otherwise... 20/20 hindsight being what it is mayhaps we gave away the farm to protect a chicken?

Agreed.

Hopefully there was some kind of sunset clause built in. I understand the reasoning behind such a agreement, and of course it would be pretty sweet for you or I if you or I happen to benefit from it, but it doesn't. Instead, it handcuffs a lot of progress we could be making in getting a better, all around, mixed use stadium built.

It only really handcuffs us if a developer/builder insists on government money... Otherwise, anybody can build a facility that could directly compete with the MTS Centre.

Exactly and I would think that the Success of the MTS centre goes to show that a building of its sort Can actually make some significant money. Enough to pay its own way? I dont know. It would have to be quite the building to pull all the concerts away from the MTS Centre. And concerts make up a fairly huge chunk of the revenue.
