is Juarez Mexico with a population of 1.5 million they have had almost 2600 murders this year. Yikes suddenly Winnipeg's crime problem doesn't seem so bad!

Those stats can be attributed to the cartel warfare as well as the disappearances of countless hundreds of women and girls each year, most of those cases never to be resolved. NPR and Mother Jones magazine have done much reportage over the years with regards to the crime waves of the border cities and done so in a non-hysterical and factual style.

Bartorn, I've been through Juarez a few times, and I literally mean THROUGH, as in as fast as you can. Its undescribable what you see there........I do not doubt that article one little bit!

Your a brave person, you won't catch me driving through there. Unless I had a brinks truck or something!

There are far better places to cross at than Juarez but Eastsider already told me why he went that way.....Juarez has always had a sleazy rep long before the cartel wars or the establishment of the Maquiladoras ....the latter two just amped shite up exponentially.

Been to Mexico and zero desire to ever go back. If I want to travel to a warm destination Barbados is my #1 choice. I LOVED Barbados and highly recommend it. I went with one of my best friends who is a travel agent and we had the best time!

And how much of Mexico did you see? It is as you know, a very large country. Barbados has one of the highest population densities - in fact I believe the highest population density at the very least in this hemisphere. I have yet to visit Barbados and I want to because of its rich pirate history.

Mexico may not be everyone's cup o' tea but before making an absolute decision about never returning - that is a shame for Mexico has been surprising and delighting countless millions of travelers for many centuries.

I loved Puerto Vallarta when I was there. What's not to love about beautiful scenery, warm ocean water and cheap drinks?

Vallarta, not Nuevo Vallarta, is cool and just down the road is Boca de Tomaton.....a lovely little fishing village with a gorgeous estuary. Joni Mitchell has a lovely getaway home down the river a wee bit.....from that village, a ten minute cab ride from old Vallarta, one can hire a launch and be taken to remote beach villages inaccessible by road.....excellent eats and cold drink and great swimming to be had. North of Vallarta is of course a clutch of beach villages around the bay of Banderas, Sayulita being one of my faves. Once again, not too far from the amenities of the city but far enough away to still retain their peace.

We went to one of those remote beaches and had lunch on it. I got to hold a huge iguana and we saw whales in the bay on the boat ride over. It's so beautiful, I want to go back! My wife and I were thinking next winter when are kids are old enough to spend a week at grandmas! I can't wait....

Go online and try to rent one of those remote cabanas.....worth the price if anything for the peace and quiet away from the cruise ship crowds.

If we do end up going there again, I will shoot you a PM for some trip advice.

No probs.....but I do recommend the Moon guide for Vallarta as it does cover the villages surrounding the city....
