Apparently local retailers have decided to drastically lower prices this weekend in order to compete with black friday. And yeah some flyers did come out in the last two days with some pretty good deals.

Hey guys... pro tip..... ADVERTISE SOONER....

holy good god you people are idiots. Not one single person will be swayed by those flyers in the last two days. Because they all booked vacations and hotels and did the planning months ago.. Damn morons. Will you get lots of people in? no doubt, but you certainly wont get any of the people already headed to the states.

asshats.

Ya kinda stupid to advertise to the people who don't have plans to go south already. Hopefully they continue this trend next year and advertise a bit sooner. It'd be nice to get a break in time for X-mas shopping season without having to resort to spending our X-mas money in the US.

I would NEVER head to the USA for black Friday. I am not a fan of shopping, especially in that kind of craziness. I have a friend who is there right now and she asked me for a list and I'll pay her when she gets back, works for me.

yup... had I known about it sooner, I might have actually planned the day off ( some deals only happen Friday morning here ) and saved some money up for it. Definately will plan for it next year if the trend continues.

Went to CT this morning at 7am (they opened early today) before work.

The one on Regent was crazy busy. Must've been several hundred people there when I got there...lines were already 5-10 deep at the checkouts.

Some of the deals were quite good though...and you could tell people came in with flyers in hand looking for specific items to fill their carts.

Oh, I agree there...but it does draw out people who would not normally be shopping...and I think that's their real target.

I would love to go down to the US for Black Friday. Some of the deals available are phenomenal...but it would cost me an extra $500 JUST to go...(hotel, fuel, food, for 3 people for 3 days...cause to make it worth it...a weekend trip would be required or face paying duty)...that $500 can buy quite a bit at a local sale here with good pricing.

A friend of mine is in GF right now, he left early this morning and is only staying for the day. He updated his Facebook saying how many great deals they found. Is it really worth it? Is it worth driving 2.5 hours, shopping and returning back to Canada? I would think it wouldn't considering the duty you'd have to pay. Or is it if you buy big tickets items that were/are made in North America then you do not have to pay duty? Not sure of the laws. I do know you have to be there 48 hours in order to bring stuff back without paying duty.

Black Friday bargains attract Canadian shoppers
Thu Nov 26, 3:52 PM
Canadians are flocking to U.S. malls located near the border ahead of the legendary American shopping day known as Black Friday, but they may have to root a little deeper this year to find real bargains. Black Friday falls on the day after American Thanksgiving and is meant to kick off the Christmas shopping season. CBC News visited Bellis Fair mall, located in Bellingham, Wash., about a 90-minute drive from Vancouver, and found a parking lot filled with cars with Canadian licence plates. Mike Sorgiovanni of Vancouver had gassed up the car and headed south in hopes of scoring a good deal on shoes. He told CBC he was expecting to save up to $70 on the purchase. Len Walker of Langley, B.C., was there, too, saying he thought he'd find better deals in the U.S. because "they are feeling the crunch more. The bargains are better." Heather Walker of Maple Ridge, B.C., was ready to boost the U.S. economy, saying she was "getting deals good deals." U.S. retailers have, indeed, had a hard time of it but no worse than those in Canada if sales figures are to be believed. Statistics
Canada said this week that retail sales in Canada were up one per cent in September, the seventh increase in nine months. In the U.S., retail sales were up 1.4 per cent in the same time period. At least with the Canadian dollar being so strong, you'd expect to find some steals, but a quick price check by CBC at the Bellis Fair mall turned up just small savings. An xBox 360 Elite was going for $299 US at Target in the U.S. At a Future Shop in Vancouver, it was $299 Cdn. The Call of Duty Modern Warfare video game was priced at $59.99 US, again, the same ticket price as in Canadian stores. An eight-gig iPod Touch? The same ticket price north and south of the border. A Canon Powershot? Also virtually the same ticket price. A Dewalt Drill Driver was only slightly cheaper in the U.S. However, one retail worker, Krystal Cantrell, assured CBC news that Friday's bargains would be hard to beat, saying the price drops would be the best all year. Bellis Fair mall plans to take full advantage of the day by opening at 6 a.m. Bring on the shopping mobs.

  • 24 hours or more, you can bring in CAN$50 worth of goods free of duty and tax;

    • If the goods you bring in are worth more than CAN$50 in total, you cannot claim this exemption. Instead you have to pay full applicable duties and taxes on all goods you bring in.

  • 48 hours or more, you can bring in CAN$400 worth of goods free of duty and tax;

    We have in past years gone to Albertville, Minnesota & Mall of America for Black Friday. I can tell you that for clothing items, sporting goods (bikes, skis, golf) the deals are very much worth the travel if you make a weekend get away of it. As far as the big ticket items, not worth it to go to Grand Forks because after all is said and done with the gas and exchange rate, the cost is about the same if bought here, as long as the exchange rate is close to comparable. And if it is a big ticket item you are looking for like a TV you have to remember that if you buy in the US and something goes wrong here in Canada, some of the warranties are not valid once they cross the border so you would have to do some research to see if it is worth it. Some Apple products for example if bought in the US, the warranties are not valid once they are brought across the border because of certain different regulations. I looked at buying a MacBook last time I was there but because of the warranty thing decided against it.
    The other thing I have taken advantage of are the great prices you get because of Black Friday online at such sites like Amazon.com. If you go to the stores in Grand Forks, Fargo or even in Minneapolis, you have to be able to deal with the crowds when you go for Black Friday shopping as they are absolutely nuts.
