something people are forgetting. Izzy paid for many many many trips for Jewish children to be flown on educational journies. the main catalyst for building this here is so that he would not be flying them away from Canada any more.. but within Canada. And from a flight perspective Winnipeg does indeed make the most sense to fly people from either end of the country.
Now if only flying people from either end of the country made any sense, then this project might.,

Heh...this entire project makes no sense...flying in children from all over Canada illustrates just how stupid this idea is....hundreds of millions to the Arabs for oil (jet fuel)...well thought out there Izzy eh??? NOT. (FYI the Jews don't like the Arabs)....the irony is overwhelming imo.

Alot of peeps go to Venice and visit museums there...
Place the HRM near the Forks, flood the area permanently, and call the place:
New Venetian Museum of Human Floods
(I know, it's not Monday anymore... but I couldn't wait til next week...)

This "editorial" by Vic Grant, news director at CJOB, echoes what I was saying a couple of years ago. This particular museum is more about ideas than things. Therefore, they could convey their ideas to much more people, any with Internet access, if the museum was a virtual museum on the world wide web rather than a bricks and mortar facility. Think about it...if you visited a museum and wanted more information about a topic, where would you go for more information? Another museum? Maybe, but you'd more than likely first look on the Internet where you would likely find way more information than you could possibly find in any museum.

Care to guess why the Dept of Canadian Heritage didn't commission this study long before the Feds agreed to chip in $100 for construction costs and $22 annually? Obviously, the project would have had or should have had, a much more difficult time getting tax dollars if the public knew that there was very little interest in people coming to Winnipeg to visit it.

Excuse Me Nov 21

Uh oh!!

It appears this will not be a case of build and they will come.

Missed it the other day but a story in the Globe and Mail was quickly brought to my attention. The federal government through the department of Canadian heritage gathered focus groups together to get a feel for the Canadian Human Rights Museum destined for Winnipeg.

The results are not good. They don’t want to come to Winnipeg. They’d prefer to see the Human Rights Museum via the internet.

Excuse Me? The federal government has promised $100 million dollars up front, another $22 million each year for operating costs; the provincial government has kicked in another $30 million, the city $20 million in contra, and now we’re told the cultural masses will do what they have to do to avoid visiting Winnipeg. And that’s not to mention the current high-pressure fund-raising campaign targeting private donors.

Maybe, just maybe, they should have done these focus groups before they opened the barn door.

Hey this is not good news for the Friends of the museum because it will be cause for second thought on the funding from the federal government, especially in light of these stressful economic times.

Granted the focus groups were small but they were sampled from across the country and made up of teachers, youth, parents, visible minorities, new Canadians and aboriginal Canadians. And the survey was conducted just prior to the financial meltdown.

The common consensus: Very few of the participants would put the museum on their list of things to see.

Oops! Part of the sales package was incredible numbers projected to descend upon Winnipeg to visit this newest wonder of the world.

The biggest issue gleaned from the focus groups was not that the Museum was being built but that it would located here in Winnipeg.

It appears Spirited Energy has yet to make it’s impact outside of Manitoba and few in any are ready to start living here, even as short-term tourists.

The question arises: Why not build a Website Human Rights Museum for a few hundred thousand dollars and use the $300 million for more important matters, such as trying to save some of our kids, those who have died while under the care of Child and Family Services for example.

Then we won’t have to build an addition to any museum 50-years from now showing how neglectful we are today of human rights.

Makes sense to me.

I’M CJOB NEWS DIRECTOR VIC GRANT

Well now...that is good news...to finally see some realistic attitudes.

The next step is to start questioning the decisions of the people supporting this project...the heavy-hitters writing big cheques to Asker.

I'll never tell anybody how to spend their money, but I can choose to not do business with people that support money-pits.

People not wanting to come here is understandable with the image of this city , the crime capital and all the negative press given to us . If only we really believed in our selves and did more to project the good not the constant bad .

How about getting to the root of the problems we have instead of trying to distract us from reality with shiny new things?

on a side note...The Museum already intends to have a "world class" internet site to go along with the physical museum. so they dont really have to change thier business model much, they just need to lop off one huge part of it.

Yeah, but a ribbon-cutting ceremony in a computer room just doesn't have the same glamour.

Doer told the crowd a major announcement regarding the Canadian Museum for Human Rights is "very close" and later clarified he meant all the money is nearly in place for the museum and there may soon be a date set for shovels to hit the dirt.

What happens when their attendance figures are off due to the recession, will they cut staff and programs or demand a bailout from the tax payer? Typical Doer.

Should Harper get a majority and decide to create a hiring freeze on government employees, will the museum be exempt? Who here is in favour of the creation of more UNIONIZED, overpaid federal jobs? Doer expanded the civil service, but that's just typical socialism for you.

or attendance figures off in 5 years once the novelty wears off... which is far more likely the case.
