Since volunteer boards for something as "small" as a community centre are required to run for their positions. Why are there so many other public boards, especially ones with paid positions, that dont have to run for office? Seems to me that does not serve the best interest of the public. At the point where a political master appoints someone who will most likely do their bidding, why not just have that board run by the person doing the appointing?

Funny, I have been asking the same thing for years and the answer I tended to get, off the record of course, was that these appointments, many of them anyway, were "rewards" for party service.

Maybe the problem is that the boards are paid positions. A small reimbursement may be appropriate, but my understanding is that most corporate board positions are not paid. If board positions for public agencies were not lucrative then they might not get used as "rewards" and we would have a better system.

most corporate board positions are quite well paid. Either in Stock, stock options, cash or any combination of those.

"If board positions for public agencies were not lucrative then they might not get used as "rewards" and we would have a better system"

agreed, however.. I do also see the merit in SOME board positions being paid, any that are paid should be elected, not appointed.

So, in Hydro's case, is the whom the ratepayers or the "shareholders", being the Government of Manitoba?

But, don't we elected representatives to handle stuff at the provincial level, ie MLA's and since they form "government", shouldn't the "government" elect, appoint or otherwise subverse citizens to sit on the boards of Crown Corporations?

nope.

The jobs should be handled by people who apply and are hired. There is no need for a board at Hyrdo or the WRHA or most of the government "companies".

With voter turn-out the way it is, you could get a small group together and elect 'your people' to all the boards.

Look what happens with school trustees now.

add yet another thing on to the civic election.

Might get more people out if they knew they could change something

You're more optimistic than me.

I think it would dilute interest even more...or allow the deepest pockets to get elected through shear name recognition, as it is nowadays with school trustees.

"or allow the deepest pockets to get elected through shear name recognition, "

which is better or worse then simply being appointed for being someone's friend?

Well, at least you don't get any surprises. You can pretty much tell what kind of bent a person has by who appointed them I figure.

Getting a one-issue special interest group into a place may be very bad for us, and it could happen. Think Greenpiece (heh) and Hydro for example...that would be a riot eh?
