ok folks. nail biting time.

Ireland Win 1-0

Since France won 1-0 in Dublin, it means it's tied 1-1, and overtime is just starting.

Ok...

France just scored.

1. Hand ball (passed to the goal scorer with his hand)
2. Players was offside
3. Refs were probably paid off by the French.

The French can't defeat Ireland by fair play, so they had to cheat!

Well my hats off to the Irish.

They fought the good fight. They came close. however, France cheated and the refs were paid off.

The Irish should stand tall. They may have officially 'lost' the battle, but they never cheated.

A defnite hand ball. FIFA has a mess on their hands. They need to address it sooner v later.

Doesn't really matter in this case, neither team would have done anything at these finals. France is in shambles with Domenech at the helm and Ireland would have had even less chance at the finals.

A shame for Ireland but at least Henri showed class by admitting it to the official (if that's true). Eurogreasy would have been celebrating like a retard who already won the finals.

Well, it does matter. Especially if you're Ireland and have lost out on the chance of going to the World Cup. There is only 1 winner, but that doesn't mean no one else should show up.

Maybe I was being a bit grumpy, your right that it's a heartbreaker for the Irish. I'm probably being more than a bit influenced by the fact that my team did horrible in qualifiers and am biased by past experiences against both France and Ireland. As a fan of fairplay I can see that it's a BS bad call (lack of call) from the ref. I'd be ready to kill him personally if I was Irish lol.

But, I'm not........

If this had happened to Brazil, the referee would be dead within minutes of the end of the game.

2010 World Cup draw: Top 10 conclusions

World Cup 2010 - Page 2 PA-8097003

1. Charlize Theron won’t be invited back by Fifa anytime soon. What was she on – a mixture of valium and gin? She looked great and flirted with everyone on the stage, but boy did she talk a lot of sh1t.

2. David Beckham’s haircut will be great when it’s finished.

3. Haile Gebrselassie is tiny, like an Action Man, but happier.

4. Crappy draw for Africa. Ivory Coast – Africa’s best team – must find a way to get one good result from games against Brazil and Portugal, while Ghana are stuck with two very strong European nations – Germany and Serbia – plus the plucky Australians.

For hosts South Africa too, the draw was unkind – France and Mexico stand in their way, and there’s a good chance Bafana Bafana won’t escape from their group, which would be bad news all round for the tournament. Nigeria might be the African team to watch instead, as I expect them to qualify alongside Argentina at the expense of South Korea and Greece. Overall though, not good for the home continent.

5. Good draw for England, even better draw for the USA. Fabio Capello will be confident that his team can win its group, but the real winners are the States, who got as good a draw as they could have hoped for (they drew three of the weakest teams in their respective pots) – and about time too. If Fifa wanted to contrive helpful conditions for its most important expanding market, Sepp just got his wish. There’s every chance Landon, T-Ho and co. can win what must be one of the weakest World Cup groups in recent times.

6. There is no authentic Group of Death. On second glance, most of the groups look very competitive and well-balanced. I don’t see a stand-out GoD, although Portugal and Ivory Coast won’t be happy to be in the same quartet as Brazil.

7. D is for Deepest. Germany, Serbia, Ghana, Australia. That’s one deep group: everyone can beat everyone else. Your head tells you it’ll be Germany +1, but the Germans will rightly be nervous about the prospect of an early exit. Still, I’d probably take Germany and Ghana to qualify here, but Serbia and the Aussies will fight to the end. A fascinating quartet, whatever happens.

8. Europe 1-0 The Rest of the World. Italy, Spain, Holland and England all got sweet groups. Now I wouldn’t bet against six European nations making it to the last eight, which would rather turn the tournament into Euro 2010. Shame if that happens. Would love to see some new teams go far, like Chile for example, who looked very tasty in their qualifiers.

9. Long-range prediction, based on the draw: Spain to beat England in the final.

10. I’m excited. Very excited – six months is too long to wait though, and way too many “England can roar to victory” headlines to endure, not to mention metatarsal injuries.

What did you make of it all? Thoughts please…

Good thoughts, Lenny. I am also looking forward to the Africans. Interesting that there seems to be more discussion about WorldCup than the upcoming Winter games, despite all months of media fanfare.

No European nation has ever won a World Cup when it hasn't been hosted in Europe. I don't expect the trend to end this time.

Spain always look great on paper, but chronically under achieve. Portugal will be lucky to get out of the group stage with Brazil, they really aren't as deep as they were just 4 years ago. France look in dissaray. England are way over rated at the moment by virtue of having one of the strongest leagues in the world. That leaves Italy, Germany and Holland IMHO who have a strong chance of making it past the group of 16.

Dark horses for me this time around are Serbia and Ghana. They may catch a lot of teams off guard.

Why do you run down footie, a game that has over a billion followers, can be played just about anywhere regardless of incomes.....soccer is the great equalizer. Anyone can play without all the bullshit of fees, gear - whatever. To me there is nothing more beautiful than seeing kids in a barrio playing a game of footie barefooted, oblivious to the abject squalor surrounding them...they are living for the moment, for the game, dreaming that maybe one day they too could be Pele.

Good point MizP, I think you hit the nail on the head was to why soccer is as great as it is. It is accesible to all, no special gear needed, no special place required. All you need is a ball (or a makeshift one), your feet, and a few sticks to mark a goal with.

My father grew up playing in the field next to the village he was from using a ball made of socks, stuffed with more socks. His feet still show the marks of the tree stumps that were in that field to this day (man his feet are nasty). He tells us he didn't get to use a real soccer ball untill he was in his early teens, and even then the ball was a prized possesion of the village kids. Eventually he went on to play semi-proffesional in his native country, played competitively into his early 50's here, and coached untill a few years ago.

It was playing barefoot with a soccer ball made of socks that instilled that love of the game into him. He can still recite the lineups and scorelines of the great games and World Cup finals of the 50's and 60's. I wish I loved anything as much a he loves football (and I wish I had 1/4 the talent he does lol).
