I have given money to Siloam Mission because I am fortunate to have more than I need to get by. Imagine my surprise this afternoon to discover that Siloam Mission sent me soup!

It was a little foil packet of soup along with a letter asking me to sign the packet and mail it back along with a donation so they can feed it to their patrons. This is a silly idea. If you just bought the soup in bulk instead of individual foil packets, you could save enough money to buy a bunch of food right there. Plus, I looked at the ingredients and found this as the top three: maltodextrin, salt and flavor. High in sodium, low in energy and vitamins. This is not good food for a starving person.

Plus, I hate gimmicks, so I refuse to play their little "game" this time. I am sipping on the soup as I write this post, and I am disappointed but not surprised to inform you that it tastes like tin.

Yea, most powdered soups are about as good for you as a kick to the balls.

They are simply asking you to help out financially! There is so much need! If I were you, I would ask hem if they actually feed this crap to their gusts! I bet you this is just someone's idea of a fundraiser. They wouldnt be feeding that crap to anyone.
Some manufacturer donated those packets, and Siloam doesn't want to serve it, except they ask you to sign it, so to me that might be creating a lawsuit where they sue you for poisoning one of their hungry guests!

I was at the Siloam mission once before when I first returned to Winnipeg in late 2007. I wanted to get my own place after couch surfing at relatives for 3 weeks. I guess I was too proud to tell them after paying my rent, and just managing to find employment I did not have much leftover for food. So I ended up venturing on down to the Siloam mission as well as the Food Bank to get me started. haha.

It is good to have a back up for hungry people! It doesn't matter who you are, they are there to help those that need help!

Too bad you didn't know the location of Rosen's backyard and bbq in those days...

They do good work there. I just question the wisdom of this soup idea. Though Rosen may be right .. the packets may have been donated (although they were custom-made).

The soup was like really weak Chicken-in-a-Mug that tasted more like aluminum than chicken. They claim that if you send it back with a donation, they will use the money to buy vegetables for the soup and they'll serve it to their guests. I can't imagine serving that crap to anybody, even with vegetables.

The sodium content in those things.....yeck. Maybe they use it as a flavour ehancer but I do know real chickens are used in the making of their soups.....cannot attest to the methodology (doubtful they make stock the proper way as it is very time consuming) but I know one of the farmers who supplies their chickens.

I do hope that they make real soup at the Mission. I am sure they do in fact, but if there was any real chicken in this little packet, it must have been less than 10 parts per million and a result of cross-contamination from another production line.
