Do you talk on your cell phone while driving? A co-worker described two cars that almost collided yesterday, and both drivers were talking on their cell phones at the time.

Yes. I have a factory built-in hands free cell phone system in my car. It has great voice recognition capabilities.

That said, I used to believe that talking on a cell phone was no more distracting than talking to a passenger. Not anymore.

good thing using your cell phone while driving is illegal eh? That totally helped to prevent that accident.

The law in Manitoba has not taken effect yet. Doesn't come into effect until summer 2010 from what I heard earlier this week when the news about the Ontario law happened.

It has not been proclaimed... true. but has passed all other hurdles (ie already has recieved royal assent)

These laws are all retarded. Hands-free is just as dangerous as hand-held, but the laws in MB, ON, and else where all exempt hands-free cell phones. It's not the act of holding the cell phone that is distracting, but the act of engaging in a conversation with a person that is not present. This has been proven time after time in peer reviewed studies. In fact, I posit that hands-free cells phones are MORE dangerous because you are more likely to get into a longer and more involved conversation.

I need to get a head set or handsfree, that way I can swear at other drivers and they just think that I'm talking on the phone.

Yeah, I do, using my hands free kit.

I have to say, I've had more close calls from being distracted by that cute little hottie walking along the sidewalk with her jumblies bouncing all over the place then I've ever had with a call.... Do you talk on your cell phone while driving? Icon_eek

I did crash once because of that.

I was 16... there were 8 of us in the car... we hit a light pole at about 5Kms per hour... it was a Grand Fury so there was more damage to the pole then the car.

she was smokin hot.

I use hands free head set when I'm driving.

I find it to be no more distracting than talking to a passenger. The only draw back is my tendency to rage at moron drivers around me, I'll yell obscenities at idiotic drivers and it annoys the people I'm talking to because I say it loudly hoping the other driver hears me.

I've had people almost collide with me and luckily I was on the ball and was able to react quick to avert disaster, those people all had 2 things in common. 1) They were Trying to Text MSG while driving or 2) Trying to Dial their cell phone.

I've sat behind people texting at a red light, light turns green and we are still stopped after about 20 seconds I hit the horn.

I've had the misfortune to be behind a guy who received a call on his cell, slammed on his brakes and then hit his 4-way flasher. I damn near rear ended him and the car behind me almost hit me. Now I appreciate the fact that the guy knew to pull over and stop while on the phone, but to do so in the midst of rush hour traffic and to do so with such haste was very reckless.

I use speakerphone if I need to answer a call while driving. I would find it annoying to carry on a long conversation on speakerphone; quick calls only.

Geeze that guy was a complete ass. I think he has been banned many times before under different pseudonyms (no, not me). I think maybe he is also a member here...

BTW smart move by zander. Maybe one of only a very few times where I've agreed with him.

Ready for the cell phone ban due on July 15?

What type of hands-free device do you have? Aftermarket? Built-in? Any advise/recommendations for those not yet enlightened?

Take note of what the Police can do in their cell-phone crime-stopping handbook:

"If a hand-operated (electronic) device is seen in the vehicle
operator's hand while the vehicle is in motion on a highway this is
deemed a violation," the order says.

"No proof is required what was being done with the device.

It also says: "The driver does not have to be talking on it or
texting with it."
Take heed cell phone scofflaws.

BTW, you can't smoke with kids in the car either effective July 15.

wanna take a guess at how long that "no proof" thing holds up in court?
