awesome.. got to see the newest transit feature at work yesterday. Not sure how long they have had it, but the stop at Winnipeg Square on Main street has the digital display of when to expect what bus.
its going to be nice when they are at more stops around the city.

If only I took a bus Southbound on Main!

I take a bus going northbound on Main...at the stop across the street....with the bush shack that has heaters and solar panels installed on/in it that have NEVER been turned on.

Oh, and it doesn't have a fancy timer thingy on it either...

Guess it's just for the folks waiting for the bus to bring them back to Sunny St.Vital!

Solar panel? Must be for future timing indicators or lights, a solar panel can't run a heater.

I'm not sure what the panels are for....maybe powering a future timing display or something. The heaters are electric, they ripped up the sidewalk to install them about 3 years ago now.

One local blogger talked about those timing displays a while ago. They only show the scheduled time, not the actual time if the bus is behind schedule for example. Maybe that's different now, but I suspect not. Anybody know if they have all buses equipped with GPS yet?

I have noticed some type of triangular sensors installed at intersections down north Main.

They were all supposed to be setup with GPS, and that was supposed to be tied in with the lit signs, showing real-time bus times.....but yeah, I suspected the lit sign on the other side of the street was displaying the schedule time, much like the useless tele-bus system.

(useless from the POV that it won't tell you that a bus running late or not coming at all)

nope.. not schedule time at all.
yes GPS is on all buses now.

How do I know its not schedule?

I was watching my bus time and it start out at 7 minutes... and then was all of a sudden 3 and then... DUE SOON.

and it was not actually 7 minutes. or 3. Due soon flashed when it was at main and portage and this was about 20 seconds after it said 3 minutes. oh and the bus was about 2 minutes ahead of schedule

So it is more or less showing random times? A person might see 7 minutes, pop into a store to get a magazine, and come out 2 minutes later having missed the bus with the sign showing "Next bus: 90 minutes. LOL. Loser."

Its basing the timing on what they percieve the speed of the buses to be. So if the bus takes 2 minutes to travel 500m because of bad traffic for the stretch it will be calculating the speed at 250m per minute. But then as soon as it clears that bad stretch it speeds back up to normals speeds and the timing is recalculated again.

Q: So, if the #27 is travelling south at 47 km/h over a meandering distance of 2 km, and the #18 is travelling north at 30 km/h over a meandering distance of 1.5km, at what time will they meet at Main and Water?

A: Thanks to construction, traffic snarls, and forty people with baby strollers, the two buses will never meet, and I'll be late for dinner.
