This year for my birthday we are trying to plan a family ski trip. It's been a few years since I have skied but we decided to give it a shot. Any recommendations as to where to go? I've been looking at Assessipi (sp?) and it looks nice but a 3 hour drive in winter is not ideal.

Frostfire is nice, south of the border though if you are thinking of staying "at home"

I have looked at LaRiviere but the accommodations suck. When we travel with the kids we like to stay in a suite so we can put the kids to bed and stay up and have some adult time. laRiviere doesn't have any suites, they have Aframe cottages that are 2 double beds in one room.

I think its sportchek( the one at the northgate mall)? They have a good little booklet (free) that actually has coupons for the family. But that was last year.

Look at the back near the skate sharpening part.

Frostfire is 30 minutes south of Winkler so you could look at accomodations there and then drive across for the skiing. Not a lot of options for downhill skiing in Manitoba. There is also a hill around Minnedosa that is ok. Falcon Ridge has some nice hills and is closer to Winnipeg than Assessippi and Agassiz in riding Mountain. Thunder Bay is nice as well but again distance is a factor especially in the winter.

If I had the time and money we'd go to Banff. Although this is for my 40th so maybe I will tell the hubby we are going to Banff. Smile

For your 40th.....NO HOLDS BARRED......I spent a grand on my 40th......threw a birthday bash with fireworks and then we went out to Inverness Falls for three days and blew off some more fireworks.....nice memories.....sometimes spending money in a "selfish" manner is not a bad thing....after all, you would not be celebrating alone right? Therefore, not selfish at all.

Assessippi is far and away the nicest ski facility in Manitoba. The Russell Inn is a decent place to stay, but they may also have cabins near the hill. The hill itself is like a mini mountain resort. They even have a "coffee shack" up on the slope so you can get a Baily's and coffee without having to go back to the lodge.

I would recommend LaRiviere (Holiday Mountain) for a day trip, or Frostfire. The two are pretty equivalent in my mind. Frostfire might be a little nicer, but there is the added hassle of the border. For an overnight trip, definitely Assessippi.

Yes!!

I agree. My last "active" ski season I think I did 14 days at Assessippi. It is a great hill, all new and well looked after and they do their best to keep the grooming up. Also, a lot of cabins have been springing up on the hill, you might be able to rent one. I checked VRBO, this is the only one up now in the area.

Oh, Agassiz is gone so don't bother looking into that. It was purchased, stripped of all equipment, all buildings torn down and the road removed.
